Stream Rave On (Tribute to Buddy Holly)

Rave On Buddy Holly by concordmusicgroup I’d say we’ve been talking about this tribute to Buddy Holly for a few months now, Concord Music has a stream of the album up on their soundcloud; and finally getting to hear it in full, you get a full idea of how fantastic it is. I love Buddy Holly, and I was super excited about it… and well I just love this tribute especially that it’s backed with some of my favorite artists…this one will surely help round out your collection. The album releases next tuesday. You excited yet?

New Music | Fruit Bats – Tangie and Ray

Fruit Bats – Tangie And Ray Ten years into a musical career spanning 4 albums, Eric D. Johnson the man behind Fruit Bats, will release his 5th album Tripper.  The album, named after a chance encounter on a train with a cantankerous vagabond, is a fictional work about Johnson and the “Tripper’s” roadtrip across America.  The first released cut from the album is Tangie and Ray, a travelogue about two people riding in the back of a truck and their travels leaving home and going back to the wild.  Its Johnson’s style all over it, a warm 60’s/70’s classic folk…

New Music | River City Extension – Letter to Lainie

River City Extension – Letter to Lainie (Ft. Glenn Tilbrook)

River City Extension’s The Unmistakable Man quickly racked up tons of plays in my library for good reason.  Its a packed album full of energetic, bouncy, huge songs that are extremely fun to listen to and from everything I’ve heard an absolute must to see live.  The band recorded this special cut of ‘Letter to Lainie’ featuring Glenn Tilbrook of UK new wave band Squeeze.  The bouncy singalong track with soaring chorus’ is near identical to the original, but the lending hand on vocals adds a nice little treat for fans.

Be sure to catch these guys live while they are on the Warped tour,

New Music | The Sundelles – Gold

The Sundelles – Gold Sundelles – Me & You Check out newly released single ‘Gold, a lazy sunny day song. With a Phil Spector reference in their name & a nod to west coast vibes, The Sundelles wrote and recorded the songs on their debut album, Georgia Swan, in early 2010. Releasing the album back in March, you might have missed one of the best summer time records. This album, is full of polished, poppy & sunny tracks from beginning to end. For one of the best summer time albums you’ll hear, I’d definitely grab this album and pump it…

Video | The Rosebuds – Woods

The Rosebuds – Woods from Merge Records on Vimeo.

Check out the video for new Rosebuds track ‘Woods’ a song from their recently released album, Loud Planes Fly Low, that was out June 7th on Merge Records. Its reminding me a lot of some Twilight Singers stuff, not quite as dark but the pulsing piano rhythms and explosive chorus’ leave me thirsty for more of their new album. The video is a collection of stark black and white recordings of surfing and a creepy vhs style (tracking fix please) handy cam footage of the singer singing. It’s really strange, but I can’t stop listening to this song, so its great to see they gave it a video treatment.

The Rosebuds will be touring for much of the summer, including a series of opening gigs for Bon Iver.

Yellow Ostrich signs to Barsuk Records

Zebra Fake Empire This week Barsuk Records announced that they signed the Brooklyn-based indie folksters Yellow Ostrich and will re-release their latest LP The Mistress on August 16th. Though Alex Schaaf has been releasing music under Yellow Ostrich for two years now, his latest LP was what really catapulted Yellow Ostrich forward in the music scene. Schaaf also made new fans earlier this year when he released a series of covers. From The National, to Sharon Van Etten and The Tallest Man On Earth, Schaaf covered them all, and he covered them well. In contrast to Matt Berninger’s heavy baritone,…

Matt Lowell – Swan Lake EP

Matt Lowell – Swan Lake Released back in March (and totally missed by me) is Matt Lowell’s new EP, Swan Lake. Swan Lake is co-written with Dead Oceans Recording artist John Vanderslice and produced by Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Matisyahu, Sparklehorse). In addition to Vanderslice and Hamilton, Minna Choi the arranger of the indie Magik*Magik Orchestra was added to create orchestrations and complex arrangements that are completely gorgeous and lush. Its a great EP that show’s off the Berklee grad’s solid songwriting and matured musicianship all in one nice little package especially for the free pricetag he’s got on his…

Show Info | Dastardly at Milky Way in JP

Dastardly – Villain Chicago based Dastardly brings their mix of folk rock & western roots style (expect banjos, mandolins accordions and lap steel) to Jamaica Plain’s Milky Way Lounge. Part of their east coast tour their fantastic mix of traveling troupe folk, & old western sounds will have us bouncing all night long. Their critically acclaimed 2010 release ‘May You Never,’ shows off the bands warm, rich sounds that seem to be endlessly influenced from folk to punk (exercises in self loathing could be a thermals song). By the record, this band seems to toil in the world of 30’s…
