New Music | The Joel Plaskett Emergency – You’re Mine

“Every young band wants to build a wall, but a real rock record’s like a wrecking ball.” Joel’s been on a mellow streak as of late, but Scrappy Happiness proves that he & his Emergency haven’t forgotten how to plug in & rock out. Scrappy Happiness packs all the jangle, all the crunch, & all the oddball guitar effects that we’ve come to expect from a Joel Plaskett Emergency offering, but sounds a little more off the cuff this time around. The record plays like a ramshackle van ride across the Great White North as Joel recounts fleeting experiences with love, endless hours second guessing, & good times listening to Hüsker Dü. But You’re Mine stands as the unmistakable centerpiece, Joel’s Who-worthy ode to the pavement. There’s a loneliness to the songs, same as you find with any weathered Canadian troubadour, but they’re spiked with enduring love for rock & roll that’s nothing if not contagious. When Joel relents that he’s picking up the pieces of a broken year, you get the sense that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Or rather, he states it expressly. “If we get lonely, if we get lost, let’s rattle on until the wheels come off.” Amen to that, brother.
