Review | The Cave Singers – Naomi

The Cave Singers

[S]eattle has been churning out one fantastic band after another for quite a few years now and The Cave Singers added themselves to the musical map of the area back in 2007, after signing with Matador Records and releasing their debut album Invitation Songs. They released Welcome Joy on Matador in 2009 and signed with Jagjaguwar in 2010 for the release of the third album No Witch, needless to say it’s been a busy few years for the band.

The momentum keeps going with the release of the their 4th album Naomi, out today March 5th, on Jagjaguwar. The boys spent most of 2011-2012 on tour and somehow managed to find the time to put together this shimmery gem of an album. I figure it’s because The Cave Singers are comprised of four hard working musicians, having recently added newly acquired bassist Morgan Henderson to the cavernous fold, and used every spare moment to write and record.  The new collection of songs will delight longtime fans and most definitely bring new ones on board, especially when the band hits the road to promote Naomi later this month.

The album opens with the jangly goodness of “Canopy,” a welcoming track which highlights the quintessential Cave Singers style of sound while introducing us to Henderson’s, dare I say funky, bass rhythm. It’s not that the raspy, soulful voice of Peter Quirk, the sparkling guitars of Derek Fudesco or the effortless timing of Marty Lund’s drumming needed a new component, but that extra layer of sound brings some sparkly new flair to the party.

“It’s a Crime” is a 60’s swagger party, while “Shine” is an exuberant, joyful party celebrating the Pacific Northwest, and the album’s first single, “Easy Way,” is a rollicking, guitar-driven party with a little flute action thrown in for good measure. The Naomi party winds down in a blast of hand-claps and tambourines on the closing track “When the World.” In case you didn’t pick up on it you should play this album at your next party.

The Cave Singers have created a collection of tunes that are perfect for a soiree, that upcoming road trip, or perhaps to just simply celebrate spring and all its glory. Either way Namoi is sure to please no matter how you plan the soundtrack to your day. Check out the fantastic single “Easy Way” above, add the new album to your collection by visiting their online store and be sure to catch them live when they hit your town.
