New Music | Martha – Goldman’s Detective Agency

Things I like, in no particular order:

  • songs that I can describe as “fun”
  • so I guess most power-pop generally
  • historical references
  • historical references to people whom I admire in whole or in part
  • mentally recasting famous or historical figures as supersleuths (seriously. Ask me about Princess Anne.)

Well, guess what Martha’s latest song, “Goldman’s Detective Agency” does? It nails every single one of those things. It’s an endearing, upbeat tune that, among other things, posits Emma Goldman as a private eye. It’ll be on their upcoming album Blisters in the Pit of My Heart, which comes out July 8th.

If you’re not sold on Martha yet (somehow), does the fact that they played Glastonbury on the personal invitation of Billy Bragg help? That’s my kind of endorsement. Also, they’re from a village whose actual name is “Pity Me.” That is a real place that you can be from. Look it up.
