When you think of Folk music, The Celebrity Series of Boston is probably not what springs to mind immediately. But on this evening, the series—which is better known for it’s classical, jazz, and international artist performances—played host to two of the Folk world shining treasures: I’m With Her and Andrew Combs.

But while the match may have seemed a bit out of character for the series, it wouldn’t take long for the performance—which took place in Harvard University’s gorgeous Sanders Theatre—to make perfect sense to everyone in the house.

The acoustics and amazingly attentive and appreciative audience were the perfect setting to hear the vocal majesty that both acts brought to the stage that evening.

I’m With Her (A.K.A. Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan) put together a set that included songs from their debut album See You Around and a healthy dose of covers, the most notable of which were Jim Croce’s “Walkin Back to Georgia” (my personal favorite) and “One Hundred Miles” by the amazing Gillian Welch. The band continues their world tour through September of this year and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll do your best to get out to a show near you.

And lucky for us all, Nashville’s Combs opened the evening with the perfect kind of music and personality to help the audience feel right at home. It’s no secret that Andrew has long been a Music Savage favorite, and we’ve seen him in all kinds of rooms, but on that evening, in that space, the intricacies of his performance and his dulcet tones were truly on display. Combs heads across the pond for a handful of dates in April. If you’ve got friends over there, send them out to catch the show with confidence.
