2014 | Courtney’s 5 Favorite Albums of 2014

James Vincent McMorrow, Post Tropical Last winter, James Vincent McMorrow released his sophomore album, a beautiful collection of songs about light and dark, warmth and cold and the stagnancy that sticks in between. Compared to McMorrow’s first album, the sound is quite different. Early in the Morning, released in 2011, relied heavily on acoustic guitars. On Post Tropical we hear drums and synths that open tracks and gorgeous layers of harp and sweeping horn arrangements that carry the choruses through. But perhaps the greatest delight in Post Tropical is that it sounds the same and different with every listen. It’s really all we can…

Review | The War on Drugs – Lost In The Dream

Listen to The War on Drugs’ latest album, Lost In the Dream, and you’ll be hooked in less than one minute, guaranteed. An absolutely gorgeous, ambitious and sprawling album, Lost In the Dream is the band’s best work. Full of atmospheric drum beats and synths, it’s an album that is as mind blowing on its first listen as it is on the 30th. Lost In the Dream came out of a time of great anxiety and depression for lead vocalist and guitarist Adam Granduciel, when touring ended for the band’s second album, and he split from his girlfriend. I…

Review | Robert Ellis – The Lights From The Chemical Plant

[I]t’s amazing what moving to a new city and a haircut can do. In 2012, Robert Ellis moved from Houston to Nashville and shortly thereafter cut his Willie Nelson-length long locks. In East Nashville he recorded his third studio album The Lights From The Chemical Plant, out February 11 on New West Records, which is simply one hell of an album. The album opens with the unassumingly charming TV Song, an ode to television. “I’m a gun fighter, I’m a bull rider. I’m a captain of some pirate ship at sea,” Ellis day dreams on the track. In a day where…

Review | James Vincent McMorrow – Post Tropical

[J]anuary is a seemingly odd month to release an album entitled, Post Tropical. But don’t let the title and cover art fool you. James Vincent McMorrow’s sophomore album is a beautiful collection of songs about light and dark, warmth and cold and the stagnancy that sticks in between. Though the days are growing longer, we’re constantly reminded that after days and days and days of frigid cold, the tiniest temperature increase or extra bit of sunshine can seem like a life saver. But when it comes down to it, this is winter. And we have a long way to go.…

2013 | Courtney’s 7 Favorite Albums of 2013

Caitlin Rose, The Stand In Nashville’s Caitlin Rose released her sophomore album this year, a fantastic set of whiskey-soaked country songs straight out of a 1950s Hollywood sound stage. It’s impressive that Rose is only 25 years old. But honestly, this girl could teach almost anyone a thing or two about writing and recording a great country album. Night Beds, Country Sleep One of the best debuts of 2013, Night Beds’ Country Sleep started with Winston Yellen dropping out of college, breaking up with a girlfriend and losing his job. Yellen then took to his ‘night bed’ in the back…

Review | The Civil Wars – Self-Titled

[I]t’s been three weeks since The Civil Wars’ self-titled sophomore album came out, and we we’re no closer to knowing any real facts about their current situation than we were ten months ago when the duo announced their indefinite hiatus due to “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” In the media hype surrounding the release, John Paul has said nothing, and though Joy has been doing all sorts of interviews, she hasn’t said much more. What we do know is that the two are no longer on speaking terms. While I don’t doubt the troubles of the two, I…
