New Music | Fort Frances – City By the Sea

[C]hicago band Fort Frances has been a regular feature here on Music Savage, their folk-rock sensibility and songwriting always touches a nerve with us, and this one hit us once again. A song written as fall hits, and with the impending doom of the winter, songwriter found solace and even positivity in the barren existence that is a midwest winter, as if there were an optimism that the winter is actually the beginning of a new year, and ripe with possibility. That’s a theory I can wrap my head around, and the music seems to do the same. It’s an…

Review | Lady Lamb the Beekeeper – Ripely Pine

[M]aine native Aly Spaltro’s latest release as her alter-ego Lady Lamb the Beekeeper is titled Ripely Pine (out on Ba Da Bing Records) and it is a knock-out album from start to finish. Encompassing the energy of her live shows into a recorded offering might have been a daunting task, but it seems to have been handled deftly. You would expect this if you’ve been following Spaltro’s rise from the Portland, ME music scene in 2007, to being awarded Folk Artist of the Year by the Boston Music Awards in 2010. Ripely Pine starts off with “Hair to the Ferris Wheel” as Spaltro…

New Music | Grandchildren – Sunrise

[R]eally enjoying the first track off of Grandchildren’s new LP “Golden Age” out 5.7.13 on Ernest Jenning Record Co. For those of you that aren’t familiar, and you can include me in the bunch, Grandchildren was the solo project from the diminutive Aleks Martay (he’s 5’3″) that flourished into a 6 piece electro-pop ensemble, this story feels quite similar in nature to Yellow Ostrich, whom I love. This first track, “Sunrise,” hits you from a few different layers, the opening atmospherics paired with a almost mathematical rhythm to it, and soon comes in swirling almost siren(y) vocal oohs, a primal heartbeat percussion…

New Music | Luke Winslow-King – You Don’t Know Better Than Me

luke winslow-king

[J]ust a few months after being signed to Bloodshot Records, New Orleans musician Luke Winslow-King just announced his new record, The Coming Tide, to be released April 23rd. The first single from the jazz / blues artist is a strolling tune that sounds as if it’s being played on the front porch of a rickety home in humid New Orleans. The slide guitar, the slow pace, and King’s soulful vocals ring true as this song delights for a short few minutes, but I’m sure you’ll be grabbing for the repeat button anyways.

Stream | Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside – Untamed Beast

sallie ford

[S]allie Ford & The Sound Outside’s new record Untamed Beast hits shelves today, and I’ve been jamming away listening to it, and think you all are gonna dig it quite a bit. It’s a raucous 50’s rock romp that is a total breath of fresh air. Definitely. If you aren’t digging this from the first note, you probably don’t have a pulse. Stream it, fall in love, and buy the damn record.

New Music | The Thermals – Born to Kill

The Thermals – Born To Kill [P]unk trio The Thermals are back at it with “Born to Kill,” a track that feels like it could have been pulled straight from my favorite album of theirs, The Blood, The Body, The Machine. It’s just under two minutes of pure unadulterated energy. It’s a revival of sound for the band, and one that I highly welcome. Look for “Born to Kill,” on their upcoming record Desperate Ground April 16th. The Thermals Show Dates 03.01 – San Francisco, CA – Noise Pop (@ Rickshaw Stop) 03.02 – Cupertino, CA @ Homestead Lanes Bowling Alley 03.07…

Review | Night Beds – Country Sleep

[W]inston Yellen has been working on his project, Night Beds, for quite some time. After a few EPs, dropping out of college, breaking up with a girlfriend and losing his job, Yellen took to his ‘night bed’ in the back of his car, got himself lost driving around the country, and picked himself back up again. His ten-track debut is a gorgeous collection of songs, sparse and soaring, that hit right on the feeling of getting lost and finding your way back again. There’s no better introduction to Yellen than the opening track, Faithful Heights, which is a short lullaby…

Exclusive | Spirit Family Reunion to play Newport Folk Fest 2013

[S]pirit Family Reunion delighted fans at the Fort last year with one of the best sets of the festival. They might have even stolen the show. I couldn’t be happier to announce the fact that they’ll be returning to the grounds of Fort Adams once again this year. Spirit Family Reunion is a living, breathing, stomping embodiment of folk music. Their music is dripping with authenticity. Anyone who’s ever witnessed they’re live show will attest that they play each note with every fiber of their being. Their passion travels from their heart straight through to their instruments and you can’t…
