New Music | Cody ChesnuTT – Til I Met Thee

You might recognize Cody ChesnuTT from his cameo on the Roots’ hit The Seed 2.0. Or if you’re really down, you might remember a sweet little jam from ten years ago called Look Good In Leather. Well, Cody finally got around to releasing a follow up to the Headphone Masterpiece & it’s a real game changer. Landing On A Hundred is a high fidelity, Stevie Wonder/Marvin Gaye caliber r&b tour de force, an instant classic. The record deals with a lot of really weighty issues, but kicks off with this delightful Road To Demascus-esque redemption ballad, Til I Met Thee.…

New Music | Matt Mays – Indio

Can I gush for a minute? If Matt Mays brings one thing to the table, it’s a hard groove, & Indio’s got as a deep a pocket as anything he’s released. It’s just locked in so hard… those bongos underneath the middle 8 are fucking relentless. Matt makes the Great White North sound like a real good time, & while he’s at it cements his modern day guitar hero status. And how many times can you say “Them’s the rules” in a song? Not nearly enough, as far as I’m concerned. Do yourself a favor & pick up his new…

New Music | Radiolucent – Rivertown

[R]ivertown is a murder ballad of epic proportions. It’s about loyalty & heritage, indignation, revenge, redemption, self-destruction & pine trees… everything that real Southern American music should cover. It’s the kind of song that makes you well up. Radiolucent checks off church harmonies, slide guitar, & b3 organ on their way to delivering what you might call an archetype. And while I guess blogs are more suited for posting 3 minute singles than 8 minute long, slow burning deep cuts, no other song on the record really encapsulates the band like Rivertown. It’s long enough, & it’s good enough, to justify…

New Music | Death On Two Wheels – Burn Loretta

[T]he Death On Two Wheels’ Burn Loretta is fully realized southern gothic rock & roll badassery. It’s epic. It’s flawlessly arranged. And if you crank it up loud enough, it will literally come through the speakers and kick you in the ass. There’s a hang man, a damsel in distress, loads of flames, & a guitar solo that will make you wonder if successful time travel may have, in fact, already become a reality. Pretty sure that’s all that needs to be said.

You can pre-order their new record here, & you can catch them touring up & down the eastern seaboard this month with Gasoline Heart. Click through for dates & locations.

TT the Bears Place got a nice sell out on Friday night with Joe and his group in as well as Newport Folk Fest and Brunch Session alums Spirit Family Reunion landed in our fair city for what may have been one of the best shows of the month, if not the year. Fletcher as usual brought his straight ahead grizzled rock / americana sound into the room and delighted fans with songs from…

Review | Kris Orlowski – Pieces We Are EP

It’s already December, and everyone is beginning to post their Best Of 2012 lists. But I haven’t begun to think about any year end lists, as I’ve been hung up on some albums that have snuck up on me as the weather has turned colder. One of those albums, which I can’t stop listening to, is the Pieces We Are EP by Kris Orlowski and Andrew Joslyn. The record, which came out in October, is an orchestral folk rock record that features a 17-piece orchestra that makes all five songs sound as equally grand as they are beautiful. Here at…

New Music | Matt Pond – Love To Get Used

Matt Pond – Love to Get Used

[I]’m not entirely sure what it is about this song that I love, but the striking feeling of nascent optimism that is ever present within “Love to Get Used,” the newest single off Matt Pond PA‘s upcoming record, The Lives Inside The Lines In Your Hand . It’s an upbeat, effervescent, track that will have you chair dancin’ and singing the chorus almost instantaneously.

Also, he’s doing quite the megatour, with a fun stop here in Boston with Jukebox the Ghost in March.

Look for Lives, February 5th.

Review | The Kickstand Band – Puppy Love

[D]etroit has long been the sound of rhythm and blues, doo-wop, jazz and good old rock n’ roll. In fact, the history of the Motor City cannot be told without mentioning the great musicians that helped create the blueprint for today’s music landscape. Newcomers The Kickstand Band have been waiting a few years to add their names to the well traveled Motown map. The trio released their self-produced debut album, Puppy Love, earlier this month on Suburban Sprawl Music and receives an A++++ in Music Savage Music Appreciation class for a clear understanding of their roots and an undeniable love…
