I revisit The Felice Brothers

Run Chicken Run (Yonder is the Clock) Penn Station (Yonder is the Clock) Frankies Gun! (The Felice Brothers) I had bought the Felice Brothers’ self titled album and was absolutely floored by their ability to recapture a turn of the century feel with their music.  It seems as though their style mixes many music styles; delta blues, folk and americana.  Their self titled album really got a lot of play out of me and then in 2009 they came out with a brand new album, I was straight to the store to purchase Yonder is the Clock.  After one or…

Son of the Sun – The Happy Loss

‘The Happy Loss’ by sonofthesunmusic As suggested from Ryan of rslblog.com I sat down to check out Son of the Sun and found a full streaming version of their brand new album The Happy Loss.  This album has the potential to make Son of the Sun a break out band.  This one is definitely worth a listen. Son of the Sun plays PA’s Lounge tonight in Somerville, MA

Dent May – That Feeling

That Feeling If you haven’t heard of Dent May, I wouldn’t blame you.  He’s a musician from Mississippi who was popularized by his use of ukelele.  It seems as though he’s put it down and made a summer synth heatwave cooling kind of song.  It’s got the right vibe for a warm summer night, and is extremely catchy. The track comes from his upcoming release, and is free to download. http://dentmay.com/

Maps & Atlases – Perch Patchwork

Banished Be Cavalier Maps & Atlases gave us Solid Ground, the first track off their upcoming(at the time) album Perch Patchwork.  I received it in April, and I really enjoyed it.  I was curious what else would come, if this were a template for the rest of the music they’d include on the album.  When I got Perch Patchwork, I instantly fell in love with it.  The key & tempo changes, it was like a progressive folk, with dabs of psychedelia.  I think at first these guys were put into a Math or Art Rock kind of category that was just…

Deadstring Brothers – The River Song

The River Song The Same Old Rule The Deadstring Brothers have this great throwback sound, a little bit country a lot of rock and roll.  I guess in similarity, they are most similar to a Drive By Truckers.  But they are in no way just a clone.  Coming from Detroit, you would certainly have expectations in their music; that being loud and wild rock like.  But what you see is not necessarily what you get.  The Deadstrings (my nickname) have this sound that is more of an homage to 70’s Exile-like Rolling Stones. Their lineup for their newest album Sao…

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Jefferson Jericho Blues

Jefferson Jericho Blues

Tom Petty’s newest album Mojo came out June 15th.  As a Petty enthusiast I was really excited by everything I had heard.  This song is full of ensemble sounds, from screaming harmonica, killer guitar solo, and some great piano sounds.  Its a song full of bouncing fun bluesy rock goodness.
