New Music | Nada Surf – When I Was Young

Nada Surf – When I Was Young Nada Surf is about to release their 7th record (4th on Barsuk), The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, which will release next year (1/24/12). I’m digging this one because its reminding me of old tunes of theirs. I love how the lightly played acoustic part relents to a plugged in electric affair. Its a really nice full sound, and I’m looking forward to hearing the album next year.

New Music | Jeremy Messersmith – Blue Sky

Jeremy Messersmith – Blue Sky Check out Jeremy Messersmith’s Blue Sky, an homage to everything going on at the Occupy Wall Street protests.  The acoustic driven song sounds every bit like Paul Simon.  Messersmith as always does a fantastic job painting an elegant picture with his lyrical eloquence and sentimental delivery.  Really enjoying this one.

New Music | Johan Reinhold – Shoot Me Down

Johan Reinhold – Shoot Me Down Shoot Me Down, a poignant song about love-hate relationships, holding on too long, and the numbness that follows is the single from the upcoming full-length debut ”Beautiful Loser” by Swedish indie electro-pop singer/songwriter, Johan Reinhold. Produced and engineered by Astma & Rocwell and Lasse Mortén (Lykke Li, Peter, Bjorn & John, Primal Scream and others).  This song jumps at you from under the cover of darkness, the instant pull from the electric guitar and its piano counterpart start this song.  But really what jumps out at you on this slow burner is how well Reinhold builds his…

Michael Kiwanuka – I’m Getting Ready

Michael Kiwanuka – I’m Getting Ready Stumbling upon this small EP by London’s Michael Kiwanuka was such a treat. His voice is reminiscent of Otis Redding & Bill Withers, his music a little Dylan, and a little Nick Drake. He was supposed to be midway through his tour opening for Adele, but as everyone knows, the tour was canceled. His first full length will come out in the US on Cherrytree Records sometime in mid spring. http://michaelkiwanuka.com/

FORK – She’s Mine FORK – Pretty Redhead Tonight, at Berklee Cafe (150 Mass Ave. Boston) Boston’s FORK a two piece band that formed by Berklee students,  John Murphy (of CA) and Jordan Zylak (of PA). Their music is an experimental pop / fuzzed rock that is quite entrancing, instantly catchy and a bit of a throwback.  On a dreary rainy night like tonight, these guys could be just the thing you need to warm your night.  Even better… the show is free. useafork.tumblr.com

New Music | Family of the Year – St. Croix

Family of the Year – St. Croix I just got this wonderfully breezy track, St. Croix from Family of the Year,s a 6 piece indie / folk / pop band out of Los Angeles.   St. Croix is featured on a brand new EP which was released back on 9/27, and a full length out in early 2012.  St. Croix is an extremely catchy song that I wish I would have heard for the long days of summer.  Its a toe tapping song that will have you singing along as the chorus is one of the more infectious lines I’ve…

New Music | Henry’s Funeral Shoe – Anvil and Chains

Henry’s Funeral Shoe – Anvil and Chains Raw, fuzzy, bluesy. Those are the words I’d use to describe Henry’s Funeral Shoe’s Anvil and Chains. These South Wales rockers are about to release their second full-length album Donkey Jacket. Their musically is distinctively dirty, raw, and energetic. Its exciting music along the lines of other favorites here like Radio Moscow or Left Lane Cruiser. Its deep south music, from the other side of the pond. Give it a listen, and get ready to hear more from these guys.
