Careers in Science Back in March, boston based americana band The Longwalls released ‘Careers in Science’ digitally on Static Motor Recordings. The album is a warm representation of 90’s post pop, that is straightforward and always fun. Careers in Science is a short LP (just 8 songs) that will have you wishing for more. You can grab the album from Static Motor or Bandcamp today, and for $5 this is absolutely worth every penny. As a man of science, I find myself ‘hypothesizing’ what I could be doing with a friday night like tonight… the answer is heading over to…

I received a copy of Jeremy Messersmith’s Reluctant Graveyard at the end of last year. Through all the madness that is ‘end of the year’ lists I didn’t get a real chance to express how much I really loved The Reluctant Graveyard. I missed out on posting this when it was new, but its well worth a mention now more than ever.
The Minnesota based songwriter admittedly painted this album in the image of the Beatles, its seriously all over it. See above ‘Dillinger Eyes’ or ‘Violet’ if you don’t believe me. In absolutely no way is it a bad thing either. The album is flipping amazing. I’ve seriously listened to it too much.
Whats so fantastic about this album is the lyrics and art behind them. In ‘Dillinger Eyes’ the song is a fun bouncy track about a case of mistaken identity leading to eventual demise, its all told with a mood that’s kind of funny, a self deprecating homicide song if you will. Messersmith’s ability to tell these stories on the album with the mood and tone he uses is what immediately drew me to this album. These are just perfect pop songs.
Further than the album, Messersmith released a new youtube video (below) where he sings a medley of songs where the lyrics are commonly mistaken. Using flash cards a la Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” he reveals the mistaken lyrics… for example the Ramones ‘I wanna be sedated’ mistaken for ‘I wanna piece of bacon.’ Its all done so well and hilariously funny.
3 CommentsLake Effect Boston three piece indie rock outfit Static of the Gods released to me ‘Lake Effect,’ a new track off an upcoming and yet to be named EP. Lake Effect is a melodic slow burner that builds and builds and nearly erupts. Highly recommend checking these guys (and lady) out… their album ‘Knowledge Machine’ is available here. Static of the Gods is playing in Boston’s WZLX’ Rock & Roll Rumble TONIGHT! at TT the Bear’s Place. WZLX Rock & Roll Rumble
Leave a CommentOut on tour now AgesandAges released another track entitled ‘No Nostalgia.’ The warm guitar riffs and gang choir vocals give it a ‘kumbuyah’ kind of feel. This track is taken from their ‘Alright You Restless’ album which is available now. Also check out the other track I’ve posted ‘So So Freely.’

Something Salty, Something Sweet River City Extension had completely eluded my musical umbrella; but luckily they just announced they will be playing the Newport Folk Festival this summer. As I had no idea who they were, curiosity got the better of me. What I found shouldn’t have surprised me, but altogether I think it’s ok to be surprised. River City Extension is huge… seriously there’s 8 members. Not just another Orchestral Indie Rock band, these guys have got some serious energy and fun in their music. They blend a mix of rural americana folk and some explosive punk(ish) outbursts. I…
Leave a CommentCheck out the new track from the Antlers, Parentheses. This one as with a lot of the Antlers’ music is difficult to describe. This has got a more rattly sound that what we heard on Hospice, but their ‘slowcore’ styling and choir like vocals are entrancing. Its a great sounding song, and makes my mouth water at another album of it. Pre-order Burst Apart before it comes out on May 10th.
Leave a CommentThe Felice Brothers recently released first track off their new LP ‘Celebration, Florida‘ entitled ‘Ponzi‘. The album will arrive May 10th & the band will be touring this album throughout the summer with Shovels & Rope. Ponzi has a little bit of a different sound from the normal Felice Brothers fare. The sound is a little more full from the normal stripped down nature of their music. Its got a choir background harmony, a smooth bassline, and a very epically big electronic finish (tough to explain…just listen). http://www.thefelicebrothers.com/

Junip – In Every Direction (Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Remix) by Mute Artists
Junip recently released a new EP (In Every Direction) that included 3 remixes of In Every Direction, above the remix is by indie band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., and 3 unreleased b sides ( one of which was posted here).
The band will also be touring like crazy, so be sure and get out and see these guys play, they are absolutely awesome to see live and well worth the cost of admission.
