AB & the Sea – Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Check out the boys from San Francisco covering the Phil Spector written “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”  This is particularly becoming one of my favorite Christmas covers this year. AB & the Sea released a great little EP a few months ago, I gave them a big write up here. Connect with them: Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube

Kurt von Stetten – Pyramid

Come Correck The do it yourself album does not come easy to many.  Especially if you are a one man show.  Multi-instrumentalist, Kurt von Stetten is such an artist. Playing every instrument on every song, he embodies a complete musician. His latest effort, Pyramid, is one of those albums that has a little bit of everything.  Its got a down-tempo ballad in the aptly named ‘Love Song,’ its got a fun, quirky  indie rock son in ‘1st Base.’  These songs are just plain fun to explore and its completely surprising that from what I’m told has limited music training, to…

A David Lowery Solo Project

The Palace Guards Camper Van Beethoven frontman David Lowery just announced that he’d be releasing a solo project of his own.  The album entitled, The Palace Guards, will be available everywhere February 1st, 2011 through 429 Records.  Being released as a solo project, gave Lowery creative freedom without being shackled stylistically by his other projects (Beethoven, Cracker) and that shines through on this eponymously named track. I look forward to hearing the album as a complete piece as this only whets my appetite for more. More David Lowery http://davidlowerymusic.com

Matt Longo Alexandria EP

The High Life Matt Longo, formerly the lead singer of Sex During Wartime, wrote and recorded this sweet little EP in Harlem, NY, entitled Alexandria. His writing and playing is an honest reflection of a relationship in its highs (The High Life) and lows (Building a Wall).  The music is an amalgamation of influences fom indie-pop to country.  Alexandria is a wonderful album that is available for free on Matt’s Bandcamp.  I’m really glad he came forward and shared his art with me, and I’m pleased to give you a chance to hear it as well. The Ones that Got Away

It was impossible to choose my top 20 (i chose a 1 and a 1a) and I felt like I was shortchanging some great music out there this year.  So, I thought it would be a good idea to view the ones that got away this year. Drive By Truckers  – The Big To-Do Drive By Truckers consistently put out fantastic music year in and year out.  This year their album, the Big To-Do (released in March) and sometimes I feel like they don’t get enough attention.  If southern rock / country is your thing, these guys do it really…

Video | The Luyas – Tiny Head

The Luyas released their video for ‘Tiny Head’ on stereogum today.   Their upcoming album, Too Beautiful to Work, will be released on February 22 (February 21, in the UK). I’ve gotten a chance to listen to the album, its a collection of echo-drenched space-age pop songs, its futurist but retro at the same time.  Its all very dreamy and the more you listen to, the more small nuances you’ll find. My Top Albums of ’10 5 – 1

It’s near impossible to pick one top album with the massive amount of music I listened to this year but I thought I’d try to at least give you an idea of what you should grab this year before we start anew. 20 thru 16;  15 thru 11; 10 thru 6 5.  Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt As well as sharing a birthdate with me, Kristian Mattson shared with us a fantastic album in the Wild Hunt.  His acoustic folk blend  and his trademark raspy voice made this an absolute favorite of mine.  His words are sincere…

Drive By Truckers “Used to Be A Cop”

Used to Be A Cop Go Go Boots, Drive By Truckers newest album is set to be released on February 15, 2011.  They’ve released a track off the album, titled “Used to Be a Cop,” a 7 minute alt country / blues track that, if you are a fan of DBT will be right up your alley.  Its a slow moving, story driven track, with a great country blues feel, it might be a long track but well worth every minute. Pre-Order at their website.
