Video | Bon Iver – Beth/Rest

[B]on Iver’s got a new video out for Beth/Rest, and it’s a pretty spot on video for such an atmospheric 80s tune. It’s the story of otherworldly love: think part Fern Gulley, part Avatar.  Bon Iver guitarist Mike Noyce stars in it, as one of the two lovers and if you make it through to the end, you get a few glimpses of the band, shining in bright light jamming out on some saxophone solos. It’s actually pretty hilarious. Which is  why I’ve always appreciated this song. Yes it’s ridiculous, and hilarious, but it’s damn good too. For those…

Live Review | Ben Howard at the Paradise

[B]ritish surfer-folk artist Ben Howard stopped by the Paradise Saturday night, playing to a sold out crowd. From the first song he played, Ben had the crowd captivated. And I honestly can’t remember if I’ve ever seen one guy, with one debut album, have the entire audience singing along, loudly, to almost every song he played. Actually, it’s the perfect evidence of Ben Howard’s charm. People love him for both his  beautiful folk songs and for his humble and adorable British demeanor. Ben, his drummer and his cellist/bassist opened with the slow and quiet Everything, which features a bit of Ben’s…

Photos | Tall Heights + Aunt Martha

Photos by Boston Concert Photography

[I]f you were amongst the brave few who braved hurricane like conditions this past Tuesday night to head to the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, you were certainly witness to a pretty special event. Tall Heights, in the third installment of their residency, hosted an EP release party for their latest: “The Running of the Bulls“. In addition to being treated to a two fantastic sets from one of Boston’s brightest up-and-comers, those in attendance were also witness to a choice solo acoustic set from Aunt Martha‘s Tim Noyes in which the enigmatic singer-songwriter played some crowd favorites including an amazing version of “Blood Shot” and a cover of 2Pac’s “California Love”.

To close out the night, Tall Heights and Tim joined forces to cover Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” something this fella hopes ends up being tracked in a studio sometime soon.

Check out pics and vids of the songs mentioned above after the jump…

[N]ight Beds is the bedroom project of Winston Yellen of Nashville. Months ago, he was signed to Dead Oceans and just now they are starting to push his wonderful music on the world. If you had been following along, I had posted a few of his tracks, gorgeous, melodic baroque – folk tracks with soaring vocals tender layers of string accompaniments that create a really beautiful aural soundscape. The single, was released today via Dead Oceans.

Video | Sean Bones – Hit Me Up

[S]ean Bones recently released a video for his superbly  chill track “Hit Me Up,” off his most recently released album, Buzzards Boy.  It’s a breezy track that makes us all beg the summer to last just a little bit longer as the steel drums reverberate, and the synths wash over this track. Cover | Kyle James Hauser – Somebody That I Used to Know

[A]pparently Kyle James Hauser and I share more than just a first name, we both seem to love Elliott Smith’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”  Check out this recording of Hauser’s banjo laden cover of the Elliott Smith classic, recorded in tribute in Denver, CO for a screening of the Smith documentary “Searching For Elliott Smith,” which as a fan I think you should definitely see. And well if you aren’t hip to Elliott Smith, take a crash course over here.

Video | Oberhofer – Cruisin FDR

[D]elightfully poppy indie-rockers Oberhofer have put out a video for their slacker friendly track “Cruisin FDR” off their newest album Time Capsules II, which was one record this year that really surprised me.  It’s a wonderful effort & a ton of fun to listen to. Check out the video for “Cruisin FDR,” which boasts the guys trying to cruise the town, but are interrupted by a horde of flesh eating zombies, all in vintage VHS off-tracking style. Video | Willy Moon – Railroad Track

[T]hird Man Records new artist is a kiwi by the name of Willy Moon, and well he’s releasing this track “Railroad Track,” that is about as catchy as an airborne virus.  Hyperbole aside, the music feels like it had some time in the supercollider mashing together rock tracks with hip-hop production.  I’m definitely hooked from the very beginning as the bells toll, and the gospel choir comes in, once the bass hits, I was totally sold.  The only unfortunate thing is how short and sweet it is, it practically begs for more. Look for this track to be on…
