New Music | Weinland – Another Dollar Rainy Day

[E]very day it seems as though we are hearing about another Portland OR band releasing a fantastic song, record or what have you. The music scene is so robust someone like me just hopes that each great band somehow finds its way to my ears. Enter Weinland, they’ve been a mainstay in the PNW for years now, and are independantly releasing their next record Los Processaur in November. Check out their single “Another Dollar Rainy Day,” a jangly folk/rock track that is effervescent, bouncy, and full of energy. The song’s gang harmonies lead the listener into a sing-songy head bobbin…

Review | David Byrne & St. Vincent – Love This Giant

[T]he music world has been waiting three years for Love This Giant, the first collaborative album from David Byrne and St. Vincent, and the wait has been very worthwhile. The musical love affair between the elder statesman of avant-garde rock and his protégée, Annie Clark, began back in the fall of 2009, when they both played the Dark Was the Night benefit show in New York. The two appeared on stage together here and there over the next few years, each contributing to various music projects, while slowly putting the pieces together for their first album. Love This Giant starts…

New Music | Kris Orlowski – Mountains

[S]eattle’s Kris Orlowski is on the precipice of releasing his new EP with a 17 piece orchestra which will release next month. The first released single “Mountains” features the orchestral elements that create a feeling of baroque-folk (that rhymes) full of sweeping instrumentation to back up a Orlowski’s strong voice.  It’s a beautiful, moving track and an EP I’m very much looking forward to.

Review | Prairie Empire – Self-Titled

[bandcamp track=2636494487 bgcol=FFFFFF linkcol=4285BB size=grande] [R]eleased this past June I must admit the beautiful, self-titled debut album from Prairie Empire fell under my radar until just recently and I simply had to tell the good readers of Music Savage all about it to atone for my music review crime. Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Brittain Ashford and her orchestral bandmates of Prairie Empire created their starkly sparse, beautifully arranged album in Portland, OR as a good portion of the band reside in the indie-rock haven of the west coast. The opening track “Ten Fold” automatically draws the listener in as Ashford’s delicate…

New Music | Generationals – Lucky Numbers

[L]ast we heard from Generationals, they had released one of my favorite albums of last year, Actor Castor. I’m so pleased to have finally heard they are releasing new music, in the form of an EP. Check out “Lucky Numbers,” a shimmering, pop number that has a bit of an electronic feel a la Passion Pit.

New Music | Ben Gibbard – Teardrop Windows

[D]eathcab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard has released the first single off his upcoming debut solo album Former Lives, which releases on 10/16. The single in question is “Teardrop Windows,” which feels like a ray of sunshine over the sometimes morose DCFC material, or at the very least DCFC in a good mood. It’s a powerpop track which is reportedly inspired by Seattle’s Smith Tower.
