New Music | Blessed Feathers – Hey All You Floridians

Blessed Feathers – Hey All You Floridians [W]isconsin’s Blessed Feathers have an interesting story of origin. When Donivan Berube left his home in Lakeland, Florida, after disassociating himself from his life as a Jehovah’s Witness. At 17, he left home and headed north straight into Wisconsin where he ended up working in a restaurant in West Bend fatefully meeting Jacquelyn Beaupre his now wife and musical partner in crime. Check out first single , “Hey All You Floridians,” that was released a while back but is being offered up in anticipation of the album. It’s a rambling folk track full…

Video | Oberhofer – Cruisin FDR

[D]elightfully poppy indie-rockers Oberhofer have put out a video for their slacker friendly track “Cruisin FDR” off their newest album Time Capsules II, which was one record this year that really surprised me.  It’s a wonderful effort & a ton of fun to listen to. Check out the video for “Cruisin FDR,” which boasts the guys trying to cruise the town, but are interrupted by a horde of flesh eating zombies, all in vintage VHS off-tracking style. Video | Willy Moon – Railroad Track

[T]hird Man Records new artist is a kiwi by the name of Willy Moon, and well he’s releasing this track “Railroad Track,” that is about as catchy as an airborne virus.  Hyperbole aside, the music feels like it had some time in the supercollider mashing together rock tracks with hip-hop production.  I’m definitely hooked from the very beginning as the bells toll, and the gospel choir comes in, once the bass hits, I was totally sold.  The only unfortunate thing is how short and sweet it is, it practically begs for more. Look for this track to be on…

New Music | Terraplane Sun – Get Me Golden

[V]enice Beach, California is always a good place to start for summer vibes so it wouldn’t be all that out of the ordinary for a band from their to have a little sunshine on their shoulders.  Enter, Terraplane Sun, and their effervescent single “Get Me Golden,” a superbly catchy song that shimmers with with a keys, handclaps and a earworm of a hook. Look for Terraplane Sun’s upcoming EP, Friends, in October.

New Music | Denver – Reno

Denver – Reno [S]low twang that is being immediately compared to the Highwaymen, Alt-Country-All-Star band Denver is made up members of Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane’s Wild Divine.  They recently released second single “Reno,” a pedal steel heavy, weepy loneliness song that’ll make you cry in your beer.  As far as projects go, this one definitely has legs, the songwriting is great (so far) and the music sounds spectacular.  If you are looking for some slow twang, this might just be the thing for you, it is certainly piquing my interest. Their debut album will be released on August 14th…

Review | Shovels & Rope – O’ Be Joyful

Shovels & Rope – Birmingham [T]he musical equal of Bonnie & Clyde, Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst have been cutting their teeth in roadhouses and bars for the last few years, and have now released their second ramshackle folk journey O’ Be Joyful, under their moniker Shovels & Rope a testament to the murder balladry of their first album.  On O’ Be Joyful, the pair have expanded their sound to go along with their live shows. The pair has a knack for spirited, “anything goes” kind of live shows that have found a way fuse folk rock, honky tonk songs that…

Premiere | David Ramirez – Paper Thin

[A]ustin Texas’ David Ramirez is an artist I think you are going to hear quite a bit more about.  I’m pleased to premiere his first single from his upcoming record, Apologies (August 28th), the followup to his 2011 EP Strangetown. Apologies, is self-released using funds from a Pledge Music campaign, which was fully funded within a day. The album was produced by Ramirez and Brian Douglas Phillips (who also played banjo, pedal steel and piano on the record), and mixed by Danny Reisch (Spoon, Okkerville River, White Denim). Ramirez will be on tour this fall throughout the west coast as well as playing a string of album release shows in his native Texas.

“Paper Thin,” is a delightfully sweet folk song about a relationship, or possibly a relationship (one night stand?) that never  was fully realized. It’s simple, emotive, first person narrative that sounds extremely intimate.  Ramirez’ vocals are gentle and innocence which creates a really nice atmosphere of optimism in the face of unrequited love.
