New Music | Will Johnson – You Will Be Here, Mine

Will Johnson – You Will Be Here, Mine

[O]ver the years I’ve been listening to Will Johnson’s bands in the form of Centro-Matic and South San Gabriel and his voice has always stood out to me.  It is innately contemplative, rough, raspy, yet calming vocals that are front and center on this slow waltz of a song.  It’s powerful stuff, and very exciting to hear more music from this guy who seems to be one of the most prolific artists out there.

“You Will Be Here, Mine” will appear on his upcoming self-released record Scorpion, out September 11th.

Live Review | Field Report at Great Scott

Field Report – Taking Alcatraz [L]ast Wednesday evening the guys of Field Report stopped by the Great Scott in Allston for a satisfying sneak preview of their upcoming debut album. The Milwaukee, WI natives have made a name for themselves through their stellar SXSW performances, and of course singer-songwriter Chris Porterfield’s association with Justin Vernon. Porterfield (Field Report is an anagram of Porterfield) was in Vernon’s early band, DeYarmond Edison, but quit the band when the guys moved to North Carolina. Fast forward to now, where members of the original band have formed (obviously) Bon Iver, Megafaun, Drying girlfriends the…

New Music | The Amazing – Gentle Stream

[P]sychedelic roots rockers The Amazing are releasing Gentle Stream, their forthcoming album October 23rd on Partisan Records, and are offering the title track off the record, which seems to be an ode to 60’s and 70’s Laurel Canyon winding psychedelia.  The song is absolutely gorgeous in its ability to be both stunning and understated at the same time and certainly seems to live up to the band’s name.

New Music | Sondre Lerche – Boxing Day

Sondre Lerche – Boxing day

[O]n September 4th, Sondre Lerche will be releasing vinyl reissues of his first four albums, Faces Down, Two Way Monologue, Duper Sessions and Phantom Punch – that include bonus tracks and outtakes, and Bootlegs, hislive record.  Speaking of bonus tracks, take a listen to “Boxing Day,” off my favorite of his albums, 2007’s Phantom Punch, a song that Lerche felt didn’t meld with the rest of the album

“For some reason it never found its way onto any of the albums. This version was recorded for the Phantom Punch album in LA in 2007 but I didn’t feel it fit the album and once again left it out in the cold.”

Which is a rather shame, because now that I’m hearing it, I’m loving it.

New Music | Mean Creek – Young and Wild

Mean Creek – Young and Wild [O]n October 16th, Boston’s rock quartet Mean Creek will release their next album, Youth Companion, through Old Flame Records.  They recorded the album at 1867 Record Studio with Chris McLaughlin, the same producer on their album, The Sky (Or the Underground), and are releasing this fantastic single “Young and Wild,” a song that has a lot of bombast, it feels as though the band was shooting for something large and expansive.  The pounding drums that pervade throughout the song set the tone for the all-out chorus’.

New Music | Bridge Underwater – So What

Bridge Underwater – So What [O]ne man recording project turned full on band, Bridge Underwater, has another sweet little indie pop track “So What,” a retro-pop sounding track that could nestle itself somewhere near Girls’ atmosphere, though it feels a lot more upbeat and less lonely.  The song jangles with glimmering guitars and a slight tremble in the vocals.  At two minutes, this little gem is just not enough for us, but it seems as though these guys are ramping up their output since the band has formed as more than a bedroom recording project.  Really looking forward to a full on…

Video | The Heavy – What Makes A Good Man

[T]he Heavy premiered their new video for single “What Makes a Good Man,” earlier this week.  The English soul-rock band is about to g out on a big NA headline tour starting next month.  I’ve been digging this track quite a bit, this band has a great feel for mixing soul, rock and blue into music that’s perfect for the party or driving with the windows down and the volume up. Look for their album, The Glorious Dead, The Heavy’s soon-to-be-released full-length album on Counter Records (August 21).

Video | Brick + Mortar – Bangs

[N]ew Jersey’s Brick + Mortar have released a really awesome, ultra-violent video for their standout song “Bangs.”  We just had the band in town when they opened up for River City Extension.  This band is definitely making some waves, their sound is definitely unique, full of fuzz and a ton of attitude.  Their quick witted lyrics have a specific style all to their own.

New Music | The Sheepdogs – The Way It Is

[L]ast year, Saskatchewan’s The Sheepdogs won Rolling Stone’s cover issue and became the first unsigned band to adorn the cover of the magazine.  Since then the boys have been touring like crazed madmen, and they found some time record their debut album (and heck it was even produced by Patrick Carney.) That track was released recently and when I heard its guitar driven rock track that’s got a little snarl to it, which feels a little bit like Carney’s influence, a bluesy rock track that is going to remind a lot of people of the Keys… which won’t be a surprise.…
