Newport Folk Festival Lineup Announced

The Newport Folk Festival lineup was announced last night at the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge. There truly is a mix of old and new with the lineup and a bunch of artists that have been featured on Music Savage in the past.  I’m extremely excited for bands like Middle Brother, the Felice Brothers, Freelance Whales and The Head and the Heart, and its cool to see there are a few bands I haven’t had the opportunity to check out as of yet.  This festival is definitely not one to miss. Review | The Seedy Seeds – Verb Noun

The Seedy Seeds

Verb Noun

The Seedy Seeds are a Cincinnati indie trio that elegantly combine pop, electronica and bluegrass.  They have a similar sound to that of the Freelance Whales.  The mixture of these elements create a synthesis of these drastically different styles that is sensibly poppy, catchy and quite nice.

They’ve recently released their album, Verb Noun on Bandcamp (available for $9) and it quickly became a favorite of mine.  In a word, this album is just warm.  Its melodies are warm & the vocals are comfortable it is just a very listenable album.  The sounds become even more lush with the use the banjo and synth vibes and complete something that is very special.

The title track is certainly a highlight, but there are some really good songs here.  Highlights for me have been the ambling ‘Coyote Song,’ the synth driven ‘Hey Exponent,’ and the title track ‘Verb Noun.’

This album is well worth multiple listens, a joy to have listened to and I’ll be enjoying it for a while longer.

New Music | The Seedy Seeds – Verb Noun

The Seedy Seeds

Verb Noun

The Seedy Seeds are a Cincinnati indie trio that elegantly combine pop, electronica and bluegrass.  They have a similar sound to that of the Freelance Whales, but there is definitely a difference between the two.  This track is a gorgeous blend of the aforementioned styles, it begins with an assortment of bass and strings, and kicks into gear with some on and off electronic elements that bring the chorus into a fast paced blur before it relinquishes back.  This off and on construction creates a great stress and relief in the song structure.   It all sounds kind of janky when I explain it, but in practice is quite nicely done.  This song is super catchy, and fun to listen to and the upcoming album, under the same name will be out later this month.

A Band Called Mondrian…

Love, A Collision Check out Mondrian, a french pop band and their track, ‘Love, A Collision.’  If you’re a fan of the sounds of Freelance Whales, or a poppier sounding version of Sufjan’s ‘Seven Swans’ this one will interest you; its got a similar feel with a banjo intro, and a gang-clap bridge… other than what you hear here, I know as much about this band as you do.  But I can say, I’m enjoying the tracks I’m hearing on their myspace, and I’d take a guess you might as well. Electric Owls – When I Was a Flood

When I Was a Flood Electric Owls’ new Cullowhee Songs EP will be released on Vagrant on Nov 9 digitally and on vinyl via the band’s website (www.ElectricOwls.com). If you are unfamiliar with them, Electric Owls is a side project lead by Andy Herrod of The Comas.  The first single off of the EP is When I Was a Flood, and it reminds me of the sound Freelance Whales, a blend of electronic and folk elements (banjo in this case.) The Electric Owls project, recorded in Asheville, NC with Herrod, and some friends.  Written over the last few months that also served…
