Ben & Vesper – Knee-Hi Wall

Knee-Hi Wall The married musical couple Ben + Vesper offer up their  newest track Knee-Hi Wall, a delightful duet pop adventure that will be on their January 25th release, Honors.  Honors was produced by Daniel Smith and Brian McTear and includes contributions from Sufjan Stevens which could make this album quite amazing.  What’s fantastic about their sound is how personal it sounds.  It’s got a fun quirky vibe and it’s lovely to hear these two sing together, they harmonize remarkably well and their voices complement each other nicely.  The golden oldies 70’s vibe, with the keyboard flourishes complete the sound and…

Nicole Atkins – Mondo Amore Preview

Vultures Check out the teaser video short made by filmmakers Mandy Bisesti and Lucia Holm, who created three cryptic and dreamy video shorts that capture the mood and tenor of Mondo Amore. Check out the first short above, “You Were The Devil.” I’ve posted about Nicole Atkins before, when she released the first single (Vultures see above) from this upcoming album, Mondo Amore.  The album, which I’ve been given the privilege of previewing is very good and definitely shows off Nicoles fantastic voice.  Her new album will drop February 8th, and she’ll be starting her new tour the following day…

Kurt Vile – Jesus Fever

Jesus Fever Check out, Jesus Fever, a light and shimmery pop track from Philly lofi musician Kurt Vile.  It sounds like one of those travel songs that drags you along for the journey, slowly and steady, and all of a sudden 5 minutes has passed, the perfect way to spend a quiet sunday.  Look for Kurt Vile’s upcoming  Smoke Ring For My Halo, the highly anticipated follow up from his 2009 album Childish Prodigy, out 3/8 on Matador.

James Vincent McMorrow – If I Had a Boat

If I Had a Boat Check out Dublin’s James Vincent McMorrow a vocal talent that’s got to be heard.  First track to be released off his upcoming (January 25) debut LP entitled, Early in the Morning, is a beautiful sounding song.  The haunting allegory of a man at sea lost in or out of love is one that’s never out of style.  The pure emotionality of his voice and the power of it during the bridge and chorus is really fantastic. Look forward to his upcoming LP later this month. http://www.jamesvmcmorrow.com/

Jeremy Lee Given – Old Flames

Rebel Ghost Last week I got quite the little New Years gift.  A submission from Jeremy Lee Given in the form of his debut effort Old Flames. Knoxville’s Jeremy Lee Given, tracked mostly at his father’s home  in Fountain City, Tennessee, the album was then produced just outside of Boston in Winchester, MA by producer Will Lakritz. The album, entitled Old Flames, has been in heavy rotation for me and for good reason.  It’s a downtempo album with some great sounds.  Subtlety in music can be a difficult concept to master and I think Given has got this in spades.…

Callers – Heartbeat (Cover)

Heartbeat Life of Love This cover of Wire’s Heartbeat shows shows off a soulful, wonderful voice in Sara Lucas; and opened me into further inspection to hear what else Callers has done.   What I found in their album Life of Love is a collection of songs written and recorded that complement and enhance her sensual, soulful voice, Lucas sounds as though she’s come straight out of a 70’s soul session.  The songs are sometimes dark and brooding and as they put it ‘cathartic.’ The band recently signed with western vinyl, and are about to go on tour.  If you get…

Akron/Family Album Details and New Single

So It Goes Akron/Family have got a new LP to be released next month (Feb 8th) from Dead Oceans records.  The album’s title, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, a wordy one, but they will tour it relentlessly over the next 3 months. The lead single, So It Goes, is a bluesy track that basically sounds like dirty Black Keys guitar riff sample.  Its rough on the edges but contains these airy vocals, and lightly sprinkled harmonizing in the background gives this track a nice contrast.  The song has this nice hectic feel to it, it really brings out…
