New Music | Barna Howard – Promise I Won’t Laugh

Barna Howard – Promise I Wont Laugh Missouri’s Barna Howard  weaves gentle narrative on his “Promise I Won’t Laugh,” single debut that I’m finding to be one damn beautiful song.  You can hear his influences as he seems to wear them on his sleeve here (Young, Van Zandt much?) as he sings simple music that sounds extremely earnest, heartfelt and engaging. His self-titled record was recorded in Portland in a basement studio and set to be released 2/21.

Video | Michael Kiwanuka – Whole Lotta Love (Zeppelin Cover)

I’m a fan of all things Michael Kiwanuka right now, and well, this dropped in my inbox and I could not resist.  Kiwanuka and company recorded this cover of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, with BBC Sound at Maida Vale Studios.  I kind of love the sitar styling on this laid back version of a great tune. I’m waiting for more details about Michael Kiwanuka’s upcoming LP, but you can grab his fantastic Home Again EP on itunes.

New Music | Atlas Genius – Trojans

Australia’s Atlas Genius sounds quite a bit similar to Phoenix, and their first single “Trojans,” a power pop sound with a driving bassline, shimmering guitars and and extremely catchy hook. It’s an aptly named song as it disguises itself, finds its way into your ears and deep into your brain and lays a siege over you.  Its a song I haven’t been able to turn off for quite some time. There’s also a fantastic acoustic version of it right here. More from Atlas Genius Twitter | Facebook | Soundcloud

New Music | Big Deal – Chair

Big Deal – Chair Check out this wonderfully intimate, lo-fi pop song from London’s boy-girl pop duo Big Deal.  The song feels so sugary sweet, and the lack of percussion makes it feel as though they are only singing for one another. They’ve got an album coming up, Lights Out (out January 24th), a SxSW debut and a few tour dates for March. Upcoming Tour Dates: 3/11–The Glasslands with 2:54–Brooklyn, NY 3/12–The Mercury Lounge with 2:54–New York, NY 3/13–3/18—-SXSW—Austin, TX 3/20–Echo with 2:54–Los Angeles, CA Facebook – Twitter – Myspace

New Music | Buxton – Boy of Nine

Buxton – Boy Of Nine Houston seems to be a hotbed for talent these days, and Buxton is one that has caught my ear with their eccentrically lush harmonies pounding rhythm & prickly banjo plucking.  Its a newgrass sound that is reminding me of quite a bit like Joe Strummer’s Johnny Appleseed.  Check out their first track “Boy of Nine,” off their upcoming album Nothing Seems Strange Here, out 1/31 Web | Facebook | Twitter Tour Dates: Jan 28 Skinny’s Ballroom : Austin, TX w/ Jack Wilson Feb 04 Fitzgerald’s : Houston, TX “Nothing Here Seems Strange” Release Show Feb 09 The…

Peasant – The Flask

Damien DeRose, the talented singer and songwriter behind Peasant, is about to release his third album, Bound for Glory, on 4/17.  The first taste we’re getting is new track “The Flask,” which feels a bit Elliott Smith with its whispy vocals that seem to float along with the subtle guitar and piano riffs. The music and vocals created a parallel meter and sometimes twists and turns the potent lyrics. The understated style of vocals and music make this the perfect quiet day song. http://www.facebook.com/IamPeasant http://twitter.com/peasantpeasant

Kingsley Flood – Colder Still EP

Kingsley Flood – Black Boots Kingsley Flood – I Don’t Wanna Go Home Our friends Kingsley Flood released their Colder Still EP yesterday, one that has been on regular replay here in my library and for good reason.  Colder Still is a 6 song EP that ramps up the energy and plays like a Kingsley Flood live show.  A bit raucous, full of energy and exemplifies the rootsy, gypsy, americana these guys play, with an added a bit of testosterone. If you’ve been fortunate to have heard them play live, you’ve probably heard most of these songs, but the studio…

New Music | Justin Townes Earle – Nothing’s Gonna Change…

Justin Townes Earle – Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now What can I say about this guy that hasn’t already been said ad nauseum.  Happily, I received word that he’d be releasing another album, and over the weekend, I think everyone had the opportunity to check out the title track from his upcoming album. The song, as is stripped down to core elements with Earle crooning over a stand up bass, and gentle plucking from his guitar.  It sounds a bit more like what we heard from Midnight at the Movies, a bit somber, poignant and…
