New Music | Justin Townes Earle – Nothing’s Gonna Change…

Justin Townes Earle – Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now What can I say about this guy that hasn’t already been said ad nauseum.  Happily, I received word that he’d be releasing another album, and over the weekend, I think everyone had the opportunity to check out the title track from his upcoming album. The song, as is stripped down to core elements with Earle crooning over a stand up bass, and gentle plucking from his guitar.  It sounds a bit more like what we heard from Midnight at the Movies, a bit somber, poignant and…

New Music | The Wooden Sky – Child of the Valley

Check out the new track from the Wooden Sky, the Toronto band that seems to be catching a wave of buzz lately.  They are working on releasing their third album, Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun, on Blackbox Recordings.  The country tinged song sings of loneliness, with a sparse and powerfully dense feel that really exemplifies this band’s maturity and sensibilities.

The band will be touring like crazy in support of this new album.

New Music | Coyote Kolb – Albedo

“Albedo” is a new track from Boston’s Coyote Kolb off their upcoming 2nd album United State, our 1/28.  Albedo follows the dusty boots, dirty blues rock style that made me enjoy their previous effort Massachusett so much. We in town can look forward to the cd release party Saturday the 28th with Boston’s Tallahassee and Larcenist. coyotekolb.com Event Info

You Should Know | Spirit Family Reunion

Spirit Family Reunion – When My Name Is Spoken Upon the near incessant applaud from my friend Steve I plugged in the Spirit Family Reunion’s self-titled EP.  The Brooklyn band, who certainly doesn’t sound like a Brooklyn band, reeks of bucolic, countryside bluegrass music.  Fiddles are played, banjos are plucked, and washboards are rattled as SFR plays their brand of some of the most enthralling, old-timey americana / bluegrass you’ll hear.  It stands to reason how these guys ended up in Brooklyn.  These songs are dusty, ramshackles that seem to blend a bit of the old and the new, and…

Video | Youth Lagoon – July

[vimeo width=”940″ height=”529″]http://vimeo.com/34332459[/vimeo] Youth Lagoon, and specifically Tyler T Williams  are now responsible for two of my favorite videos.  When Youth Lagoon released the video for Montana, I was floored by the elegance and beauty of both the video and the song.  I don’t think the effort for July ups the ante, but it certainly is on par with Montana.  What July does have, is a great climactic feel, as the music gets huge, the cinema follows along. Its such a great song, and video, a wonderful teamwork of artistry and sound.

New Music | Harriet – I Slept With All Your Mothers

Harriet – I Slept With All Your Mothers Glad to see Alex Casnoff (ex-member of Dawes) has landed somewhere.  His new band, Harriet, is embarking on the self-release of their debut EP, Tell The Right Story, on January 31, 2012. The first single being “I Slept With All Your Mothers,” which has whispers of Dawes influence (check out the percussion and basslines … When My Time Comes much?) feels big and near cinematic.  Its a powerful sound, and barely harnesses Casnoff’s staunch anthemic vocals. It’s exciting news for fans of Casnoff’s and I look forward to the end of the month…

Chicago’s A Lull is an experimental psych pop outfit that have an almost primal sound that gives their music an intensity thats as percussive as it is beautiful. Released for free, the thumping, psych track is hypnotic and fuzzy. Grab the mp3 free from Mush Records here. Web | Facebook | Twitter

New Music | Yukon Blonde – Choices

Yukon Blonde – Choices I really dig what Yukon Blonde is doing with their music.  Its a west coast vibe, but with a cool Canadian breeze blowing over it.  The cool harmonies, and chilled out solo on this track really tie well together.  The Vancouver-based Yukon Blonde had debuted this track off their Fire // Water EP.  The song was a accident in the work, starting off as a studio experiment that turned into a fantastic song.  Also, we can get excited as we expect to see a forthcoming LP set for the end of this month. What We Missed 2011

I would like to think I do a pretty good job of covering as much music as possible, and given the chance to digest a ton of music its obvious that I’ll miss some of the fantastic releases that a year has.  These are some of them that are sticking out to me, ones that I’ve only recently gone back and listened to and realized what a god awful fool I was for not mentioning them more. Black Joe Lewis – Scandalous Black Joe Lewis – She’s So Scandalous Soul rock & roll without comparison, Black Joe Lewis & the…
