Review | Cults – Cults

Cults – Abducted by cultscultscults A great debut album can do a lot of things. It gets the blogs buzzing, ends up on year-end best-of lists, and most importantly, garners and inspires a large audience of new fans. But indie darlings Cults haven’t been paying much attention to the standard cause-and-effect timeline of breaking bands. They’re doing it all backwards. Sometime in February of 2010 Cults released a three-song EP via their bandcamp page. And due to the lack of information on the site, and the general un-google-able nature of their band name, nobody really knew anything except what could…

Tonight | The Barr Brothers at the Lizard Lounge

Barr Brothers – “Beggar In The Morning” by indiemusicfilter The Barr Brothers, a quartet from Montreal, are playing at the Lizard Lounge tonight. Fronted by Brad Barr and his brother Andrew Barr, their meandering folk sound is aided by Sarah Page’s harp and Andres Vial who plays keyboards and bass. The stories of how the brothers ended up in Montreal and how they met harpist Page are as entertaining as their thoughtful songs. For Brad Barr, Montreal had an affect on him. Though originally from Providence, RI, and having lived in Boston, the brothers were traveling with their first band,…

Tonight | Doug Paisley at Club Passim

Doug Paisley ft. Leslie Feist – Don’t Make Me Wait There was a time, not too long ago, when I had never heard of Daytrotter. I try not to think about it too much. But these days, the mastermind behind Daytrotter, Sean Moeller knows his music. When he tweets about a band, people, and I, listen. So back in January, when Sean tweeted that he was loving Doug Paisley, it got my attention. But when my favorite band Dawes tweeted back that they loved Paisley’s last album Constant Companion, I knew I had to listen to it. Immediately. Paisley, hailing…

New Music | Superhumanoid – Mikaleh

Superhumanoids – Mikelah LA’s Superhumanoids released ‘Mikelah’ via RCRDLBL today.  Its a dreamy electronic goody with the subtle hazy electronic sounds and a driving beat that makes the song fly amongst the clouds.  The pounding drums and string assortment really make this track stand out.  The single, will appear on a new 7″ that is available tomorrow from White Iris.

New Music | The Wandas – Forever and Ever

The Wandas – Forever and Ever The hotbed of talent here in Boston is sometimes staggering, and the Wandas are definitely in thick of it.  Boston quartet The Wandas announced the release of their new self-titled album, out August 30th.  The Wandas recorded at MixArt Studios [The Stills, Arcade Fire] in Montreal, Canada to work with long-time fan and producer Patrick Krief [guitarist and co-writer of The Dears.] They have decided to release track ‘Forever and Ever‘ a warm and retro sounding post-rock track with a sonically tight bassline, sweeping guitars, reverb tinged vocals and some angelic sounding three part…

New Music | EMD (Early Day Miners) – Stereo/Video

EDM – Stereo/Video Bloomington’s Early Day Miners stripped down their sound on their latest album, Night People which was recently released through Western Vinyl.  The band has shortened their moniker to simply EDM and released this very stripped down sound that is reminiscent to me of a knopfler/dire straits kind of thing.  Very Much digging this.
