Twilight Singers – On the Corner

On the Corner New track from Twilight Singers upcoming album, Dynamite Steps.  As you’d expect its a dark sided, reflective track but it’s got a powerful, redemption feel to it, the music has some really great highs and lows, and a major sense of catharsis.  Dulli’s voice lends itself perfectly to this sound, employing a sense of regret but also a feeling of purification.   After hearing Blackbird and the Fox, and this track, Dynamite Steps is looking like it could be a fantastic album and I look forward to getting my hands on it come February 15th.

Akron/Family – Silly Bears

Silly Bears

Akron/Family have got a new LP to be released next month (Feb 8th) from Dead Oceans records.  The album’s title, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, a wordy one, but they will tour it relentlessly over the next 3 months.

This second single, Silly Bears, is a hazy and chaotic journey to say the least.  The fuzz on this song is palpable, the lyrics simple, but for one reason or another its entirely listenable.  The simplistic vocal harmonies are in direct response to the wildly complex music going on beneath.  This is well worth a few listens and a direct line to tickle the bug for their upcoming album.

Hands & Knees – Wholesome

Sitting at the Piano Disappearing Massachusetts based art pop quartet Hands & Knees release their newest album entitled ‘Wholesome’ today.  Released digitally and available for free, or the pay what you want route on bandcamp might give you the idea that this is just another one to pass over.  I assure you, it is not. Recorded here in Massachusetts (Shelburne Falls to be exact) Hands & Knees pull from a multitude of influences on this album.  This album is a pure sing-a-long treat and steals your attention from the get go.  Album opener ‘Throw Me From the Bridge of Flowers,’…

Wanda Jackson and Jack White – Thunder on the Mountain

Jack White may be the most prolific artist out there today, and yet another fantastic cover comes out with his name on it.  He lent his talents to Wanda Jackson in this cover of Dylan’s Thunder on the Mountain.  What’s even better?  The whole thing was Dylan’s idea.  “Jack wanted me to do a Bob song,” Jackson tells Spinner. “They’re longstanding friends and Bob suggested ‘Thunder on the Mountain.’” ‘The Party Ain’t Over’ will be out Jan. 25 via White’s Third Man Records. http://www.wandajackson.com/

Peter, Bjorn & John – Breaker, Breaker

Breaker, Breaker Check out our first releaseof Peter, Bjorn & John’s forthcoming album.  The video above is reminding me of The White Stripes’ Fell in Love With A Girl.  A fast & furious guitar driven song that really raw sounding.   The song will appear on the forthcoming album, Gimme Some (out 3/29), and to be honest, I’d like to hear some more.  The most unfortunate part of this song is how short it is.

Hey Rosetta – Yer Spring

Yer Spring Newfoundland orchestral indie rock band Hey Rosetta! is following up their 2008 album, Into Your Lungs, with Seeds a new album written over the last 2 years.  Out 2/15 the album is right around the corner. First single, “Yer Spring” a song about problems on the road, about the band’s touring and the amount to time spent in bars, .  The song starts off a dreary reflectory piece, and finishes out with a sense of positivity as they ramp things up with layers of strings, crashes, and soaring vocals.  It sounds business as usual for Hey Rosetta! and…

Foster the People – Helena Beat

Helena Beat Over the summer LA band, Foster the People, had released a track entitled ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ one of the more catchy songs of the beach season.  You were sure to be humming the chorus, singing along and just generally grooving to that track. The band entered the studio to record, and fell off the grid. Six months later they released a second track. They come back with Helena Beat a synthy, groove based track thats very similar to a Passion Pit kind of song.  Gang chorus’ and synth beats.  Its a fun track and looks to show off…
