New video from SSLYBY, for their track “Sink / Let it Sway.” Fans of action films, specifically ‘Point Break’ will be more than excited for this. In email, the band mentioned this: The video was directed by our good friend Brook Linder (who also directed “Modern Mystery” and “Glue Girls”). It’s like Die Hard 3 meets Point Break meets Lethal Weapon 2 meets True Lies. There were a few casualties: Jonathan messed up his ankle, John bit part of tongue off jumping from a chain link fence, and Will almost broke his hand again. Hopefully we won’t get sued by…

Always In Every Direction Junip is a project featuring Swedish singer José González and some his closest friends. The band began 10 years ago, but was sidetracked by the success González found with his solo projects, particularly his album Veneer. Formed in Sweden in the late 90’s the alt / acoustic folk band released their most recent album Fields in September 2010. The band plays mellow yet danceable folk with a worldly rhythm bringing a Latin jazz feel to each song. The work of keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn injects rich, ambient sounds while all is complemented with Gonzalez’ soft vocals that have a…

Leave a CommentLouder than Ever Another track from upcoming Cold War Kids album, Mine is Yours, has surfaced. The track, Louder than Ever, a rousing track with that really shows a progression in songcraft, musicianship and recording for the CWK’s. Really tightens up, while still having the feel of their earlier stuff.
Leave a CommentWhen I Was a Flood Electric Owls’ new Cullowhee Songs EP will be released on Vagrant on Nov 9 digitally and on vinyl via the band’s website (www.ElectricOwls.com). If you are unfamiliar with them, Electric Owls is a side project lead by Andy Herrod of The Comas. The first single off of the EP is When I Was a Flood, and it reminds me of the sound Freelance Whales, a blend of electronic and folk elements (banjo in this case.) The Electric Owls project, recorded in Asheville, NC with Herrod, and some friends. Written over the last few months that also served…
Leave a CommentColors It’s not necessarily hard to define April Smith & the Great Picture Show’s sound, classy, cabaret styled pop music. The music has a nostalgia sound to it, April Smith’s voice is utterly fantastic. Catching her set in Newport at the Folk Festival this summer, I was completely surprised at just how fantastic she was live, her voice was so perfect, the crowd ate up the music and I’ve been dying to see her again. I’ve been particularly enamored of the video (above) for her song ‘terrible things,’ as it is zombie season (halloween.) The music is fantastic, and the…
3 CommentsI thought originally the eponymously named single from Philadelphia rockers Free Energy was fantastic to begin with. Fast forward a few months and our Boston band, Bodega Girls remix it, flip the world over, and I’m totally in love with it. Check the unofficial video above, and if you dig it, you can download it here. Free Energy – Free Energy (Bodega Girls Remix) Bodega Girls Website
1 CommentIndie Dance/Punk band Ima Robot released their newest album Another Man’s Treasure last week. Its an hour long foray in experimental electronic rock. It’s rather softer than previous efforts but I think this is what makes this album that much more accessible. For those who don’t know it, this is Alex Ebert’s previous project, before he became Edward Sharpe. Opening single, Ruthless, was released with a couple of videos back in September. Upon the first listen through of the new album, Another Man’s Treasure feels like the Ima Robot is experimenting with softer, more electronic rock sound. Tracks like, Life…
