Wishlist | Newport Folk Fest 2013 – Part One

[A]s we near the end of winter we’ll all be thinking about long hot summer days, and of course, Newport Folk Festival. It’s become the must go event of the summer for many of the music lovers in the northeast, selling out the last few years, and this year quickly selling out on early bird tickets and three day passes.  There are still tickets available, but they are being gobbled up pretty quickly, and will soon cease to exist. All of this has been done by the NFF team without any formal spending in marketing, and remarkably without actually posting a lineup.

That lack of a lineup leaves a lot of us putting our faith in those that create the festival, and well, we’d love to put our input in … because well, we’ve got this outlet and we’re always eager to spread the gospel of the bands we love. So we were thinking, of the bands we all love who would we like to see most at Newport this summer?

If you haven’t already gotten tickets, I’d suggest you do so now, before they sell out. >> Buy Tickets <<

Best Records of 2012 | 30 – 26

30. Alabama Shakes – Boys and Girls – Fueled by huge buzz, I mean mega mega buzz the Alabama Shakes released their first LP this year, Boys and Girls, a record that might not have been able to be talked about more than it was. This record is all built around one thing, Britney Howard’s voice. She’s got soul, she’s got that raspy, throaty voice. The music is a 60’s soul / rock hybrid that fits Howard’s voice perfectly. If you haven’t heard of this band already a thousand times, check out the record for godsakes. Listen: Alabama Shakes –…

Review | Denver – Self-Titled

Denver – The Way It Is Denver – Reno [P]ortland, Oregon’s journeymen rockers Denver are a collection of talented musicians from all over the country rock landscape and includes members of Blitzen Trapper, when they aren’t busy with their albums or tour schedule. Released in August, the self-titled, wonderfully southern album contains music that sounds as if it were lovingly put together by best friends with many stories to tell and makes you want to kick-back on the porch with your dog and a cold beer to listen to them all. From the album’s opening number “Toledo,” to the mournful…

New Music | Denver – Reno

Denver – Reno [S]low twang that is being immediately compared to the Highwaymen, Alt-Country-All-Star band Denver is made up members of Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane’s Wild Divine.  They recently released second single “Reno,” a pedal steel heavy, weepy loneliness song that’ll make you cry in your beer.  As far as projects go, this one definitely has legs, the songwriting is great (so far) and the music sounds spectacular.  If you are looking for some slow twang, this might just be the thing for you, it is certainly piquing my interest. Their debut album will be released on August 14th…

New Music | Denver – The Way It Is

Denver – The Way It Is [D]enver, an All-Star band based out of Portland consisting of members of Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane’s Wild Divine. Check out their first single, “The Way It Is,” a dusty, 70’s country slow burner that feels like it belongs in a dark, lonely saloon out in the middle of the desert. The weeping slide guitar, the steady rhythm and solemn vocals all produce a Highwayman kind of feel.
