Down By the Water January Hymn The Decemberists are synonymous with songs of forlorned sailors, drunken seafarers and tempestuous characters of a time we’re all glad we missed.  When they released The King is Dead, there was an air of let down with this album as if The Decemberists had turned a deaf ear to what they do so well.  What is it we have with The King is Dead?  We’ve got one fantastic Americana album.  With help from Gillian Welch, and Peter Buck (REM) this album is damn fine. The Decemberists – January Hymn

January Hymn January Hymn is the second shared track from the Decemberists’ upcoming release, the King is Dead. January Hymn is near the archetype for a Decemberist track.  In no way is that a bad thing.  Meloy employ’s his trademark vocals, the subtle echo that feels like a tremble.  The track feels as though its an opener for a huge epic track.  We won’t really know until we hear the album as a whole, but its safe to assume, The King is Dead, will bring the Decemberists into the new year with some fantastic music.
