Album Preview + Video Premiere! The Silks – Live Bootleg

What’s better than seeing The Silks play live? That’s not some snarky lead in from this music blogger, that’s an actual question directed at each of you. In the nearly-three-years time since I first saw the fellas from The Silks drop their blues-laden rock-n-fucking-roll on an audience, they’re probably the band I’ve spent the most time seeing live. And there’s certainly good reason for that. In that first review of their live show, yours truly stated: “…if you’re lucky — maybe you get a band that makes you want to go buy a Firebird and drive around with the T-tops…

2016 | Steve’s Top Albums of the Year

It would be no exaggeration to say that this was a stormy year that was challenging for a lot of people on a lot of different levels. When these kinds of times are upon us, music is consistently there to help lift us, unite us, rally us and carry us through. 2016 certainly proved that to be true for me (yet again.) From the first week of January to the waning moments of the December, the albums on this list—along with probably a hundred others—gave me something to continually look forward to. I hope they did the same for you,…

2016 | Ryan D’s Favorite Albums & Singles of the Year

It’s been a hell of a year! I mean that in the best and worst of ways for 2016. When everything around us fell apart we had some fantastic music to help see us through it all. There were so many amazing albums and singles released in 2016, which made the year more tolerable than it otherwise should have been. When all else fails at least we have music! You’ve read the rest now it’s time for the BEST! These albums listed below are simply highlights in a standout crowd of bands and musicians that made ’16 a great year for…

Photos + Review | Copenhagen Beer & Music Celebration

The Copenhagen Beer and Music Celebration originated in Copenhagen, Denmark and has been celebrating the blissful marriage between beer and music for years. This weekend marked the first ever CBC in the United States and Boston was fortunate enough to host. Friday night’s session kicked off with music from Boston’s local band Vunderbar followed by folk rock band, The Barr Brothers from Montreal. Unfortunately, just as Friday’s headliner, experimental indie rock band Yo La Tengo, was finishing their set storms sent event goers running for the shelter of the beer tents. The high energy banjo twang of the local folk…

New Music | The Silks – Live and Learn

Those lovable rock scoundrels The Silks are — thankfully — at it again. A PVD-based southern-rock/blues/country band “that makes you want to go buy a Firebird and drive around with the T-tops off while pumping your fist in the air”(that’s right, I just quoted myself from 2.5 years ago,) The Silks have been making a name for themselves for the past few years by kicking ass and taking names everywhere from Somerville living rooms to The Fillmore. And while nothing will ever compare to seeing these musical magicians in the flesh, we’re all going to have a new official album…

Photos + Review | Julie Rhodes + The Silks + Abbie Barret @ Thunder Road

On Friday, March 4th thunderous roars could be heard throughout the streets of Somerville, while a thunderous voice shook a packed house inside Thunder Road, one of the area’s newest venues. The roars were from the appreciative crowd and the voice belonged to Massachusetts native, and Somerville resident, Julie Rhodes. This was the record release show for Rhodes’ fantastic debut album, Bound to Meet the Devil, and the soulful singer brought her A-game to the stage, not that we expected anything less. The greater Boston area is chock full of talented musicians and it seemed as though they were all…

Photos | The Silks + Smith&Weeden @ The Kitchen Sessions

Photos by Boston Concert Photography Some rainy Saturday nights it just doesn’t pay to wander outside your door. You’re better off getting cozy and watching a bad movie in your living room. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that if on that rainy Saturday night there’s a Kitchen Session going on, it always pays to venture out into the world. This was precisely the case last weekend. After bundling up, I grabbed my camera and a few beers and headed off to watch two of Providence, Rhode Island’s best new bands — The Silks and…

Photos | The Curtis Mayflower + The Silks @ Beatnik’s

Photos by Boston Concert Photography This past Saturday — January 25th, 2014 if you’re reading this at some point in the distant future — the world officially received one hell of an album. After a year of build up, The Curtis Mayflower finally let go of “Everything Beautiful is Under Attack” and watched as it spread across a packed room at Beatnik’s in Worcester. I realize “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover,” but if you can judge an album by the way it’s received by an audience, then I do believe the Worcester-based band has a winner on it’s hands.…
