Review | Yellow Ostrich – The Mistress

Yellow Ostrich – 13 Mary (alternate) For a band who landed on everyone’s radar by doing amazing covers of amazing indie songs, Yellow Osrich has managed to, in their debut album The Mistress, create a wealth of new tunes that are entirely unlike anything we’ve ever heard from them. They’ve gone from putting a new take on others’ songs, to creating entirely original songs that are just as endearing and catchy. Yellow Ostrich is fronted by Wisconsin-native Alex Schaaf who currently calls New York home. When he moved to New York, he blindly contacted drummer This cleanser only that young…

Video | The Middle East – Jesus Came to My Birthday Party

The Middle East may have hung up their collective instruments, but they still released a stellar album in I Want That You Are Always Happy. Its definitely going to be tops in some album lists this year. Their first single off the album is “Jesus Came To My Birthday Party,” a sunny, exuberant, guitar-driven pop gem. The band threw a competition to make the music video for the single. The contest drew entries from around the world (all of which can be viewed at genero.tv/themiddleeast). This is the winter. You need to buy: I Want That You Are Always Happy

New Music | The Royalty – All Alone

The Royalty – All Alone Check out The Royalty’s All Alone, that could be pulled from a Ronettes LP.  The Royalty is an indie Rock and Roll fivesome from El Paso, TX whose music lives and breathes the same 60’s retro doo wop sound that I really can’t get enough.  “All Alone” is a track released off their debut eponymous full length, The Royalty and one that feels a bit retro but still has a lot of contemporary feel to it.  The harmonies sound great, the vocals soar, and your fingers will snap to this great number from an upcoming…

New Music | Ganglians – Drop the Act

Ganglians – Drop the Act

“Drop The Act” is the lead track on Ganglians new album Still Living, being released by Lefse Records on August 23rd. This is the third track released from the psych-pop album. It’s got a sunny nostalgia feeling to it, a beach boys-esque feel in the melodies; yet the hazy psych-pop we’re coming to expect from this band.

Catch Ganglians on a West Coast tour with labelmates Cuckoo Chaos.

Review | The Wooden Birds – Two Matchsticks

Wooden Birds – Two Matchsticks Back in 2009, Austin, TX quartet The Wooden Birds released their debut album Magnolia to positive reviews. And two years later not only is their sophomore effort Two Matchsticks better. But it’s simply bigger. The first time around, The Wooden Birds cemented their sound — a mix of whispery but assured vocals from frontman Andrew Kenny and Leslie Sisson, spoken over rambling and babbling guitars and percussion. It’s a contrast that sounds both distinct and organic. This time around on Two Matchsticks, the songs sit better as a set, and the album in its entirety…

New Music | Blitzen Trapper – Love the Way You Walk Away

Blitzen Trapper – Love the Way You Walk Away

Second released cut from Blitzen Trapper’s upcoming new album American Goldwing is a 70’s folk rock influenced track. Its slow acoustic intro relents into a slow foot stomper, complete with banjo and synth accoutrements and Earley lends his fantastic vocals to this warm, country tinged track that sure feels like good ol road trip music.

American Goldwing drops on us 9/13 on Subpop, and Blitzen Trapper just announced a huge co-headlining tour with Dawes which stands to be one of the best tours we’ll get to see this year.

Buy some tickets and see some awesome live music.
