Caitlin Rose – Shanghai Cigarettes
Tonight opening for Hayes Carll is Nashville TN’s Caitlin Rose. She’s an up and coming alt country / folk songstress who is still extremely young (24) and just released her debut full-length in March. Her songs are naive, vulnerable and honest. She writes in a near pure confessional style that can be heart-wrenching and quite humorous and satirical. Her music is steeped in country style but that isn’t where it ends. I hear a lot of inspiration from girl pop of the 50s and 60s (see She & Him) to luminaries like Patsy Cline or Linda Ronstadt. Its traditional country with twists of popular music. Her album Own Side Now, explores a lot of these styles with an experienced touch of someone years older than her. Her modern takes on age-old themes (love, heartbreak etc.) are refreshing and great to listen to.
