On Tour | Mayer Hawthorne, The Heavy

After his breakout in 2009, throwback soul singer Mayer Hawthorne is on a national tour with backing band The County, and headed our way.  Mayer’s sound is an authentic brand of neo-soul that proves his Motown background, which is exemplified in his popular debut A Strange Arrangement, which quickly became one of my favorite albums of the last two years. Though he played almost all of the instruments on the album, Mayer is accompanied on the road by The County, a full backing band that tactfully fleshes out Mayer’s compositions in person. Mayer Hawthorne & The County are joined by The Heavy…

Album Review | The Moondoggies – Tidelands

Tidelands is the shimmering, new folk / americana album from the Moondoggies, a Seattle based quartet.  The album is a fragile indie folk harmony driven album that will have you digging deeper and deeper each time. Whats great about this album, is each song seems to flow into the next, it’s got a great feel from beginning to end.  To reiterate what it seems like everyone is saying, they wrote this album, as an album.  A full album that each song is integrated to create a sum of parts, rather than parts making the sum.  The album begins with single,…

New Music | Andrew Bird – Hot Math

Andrew Bird – Hot Math On October 25, Andrew Bird will release Useless Creatures, an instrumental album which will include 9-tracks featuring guests Wilco’s Glenn Kotche and Todd Sickafoose. “Hot Math,” available as a free download from Bella Union. ‘Hot Math‘ is a lo-fi recording I made myself in my barn,” Bird said in a NY Times column last year. “It’s an example of a West African polyrhythmic groove I’ve been into for years and in this case I was clearly enjoying myself. This is elusive stuff. It just doesn’t work by choreography; you just have to be in the right mood.”

Album Review | Meridene – Something Like Blood

Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s Meridene just released the follow up to their 2008 debut album, You’re Not Pretty.  The aforementioned album, entitled Something Like Blood, is something of a power pop gem.  Simply put, this album is really good. Something Like Blood was recorded at the home-studio of Bon Iver, April Base, in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Meridene also found support from fellow local musicians. The album was produced and mixed by Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier) with T.W. Walsh (formerly of Pedro The Lion and The Soft Drugs) mastering. The hook on the album is one I’ve been listening to…

Cover Song | Karen O. – If You’re Gonna Be Dumb

Karen O. (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs) – “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough” by Some Kind of Awesome Check out the cover Karen O did of Roger Allan Wade’s If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough, for the upcoming Jackass 3-d soundtrack.  Strange to hear Karen O go country here, but it sounds fantastic; her voice as usual sounds great.

New Music | Le Sands

Pretenders Easy to Please Glowing Le Sands are a sun-soaked pop band from San Diego, CA consisting of singer Austin Taylor Tirado (who began the band alone in his bedroom in January of 2010), drummer Joel Plotnik, guitarist Andy Breihan and bassist John Fredericks. With dreamy electronic synths, and a new wave dancepop sound, it’s unavoidably fun; the real gem here is, Pretenders, a kind of dance pop drum beat, synthy, heaven-like song.  The music shows a lot of promise, and I look forward to hearing a full length from them in the future. Keep an eye out for LeSands…
