New Music | Trails and Ways – Jacaranda

I’ve been combing through my Music Savage inbox opening email submission after email submission, in an attempt to find my summer album of 2015, and ladies and gentlemen I believe my search has finally ended. I present to you Oakland, California 4-piece Trails and Ways. Bandmates Hannah van Loon (guitar/synths), Keith Brower Brown (guitar/synths), Ian Quirk (drums), and Emma Oppen (bass) are set to release their debut full-length album, Pathology, out 6/2 via Barsuk Records. The latest single is the spectacularly dance-fueled, ridiculously catchy number “Jacaranda,”  a song meant for repeated listens while driving with the windows down, or…

Video Premiere | The Zambonis – Don’t Pick a Fight With Chara

There aren’t many things I love more than music and hockey, so when the two are combined it’s a win worthy of the rock n’ roll Stanley Cup. Sure that doesn’t exist (yet) but if it did Bridgeport, CT’s one and only hockey loving band, The Zambonis, would hoist the trophy high each and every season. Formed in 1991 by Captain Dave Schneider, The Zambonis quickly established themselves as the undebatable “Rock Lords of the Rink” with the release of their debut album 100% Hockey…and Other Stuff. The “other stuff’” indicated in the title is in fact hockey related…

Video | Hot Chip – Need You Now

London’s purveyors of perpetual dance beats and electro-soul since 2000 are back with their sixth studio album, Why Make Sense?, out May 19th via Domino Records. The video for the second single, “Need You Now,” is a looping time hop of mystery and heartbreak set to a pulsing house-rhythm and a sorrowfully-spiraling chorus, provided by a sampled vocal from 80’s R&B group Sinnamon, eternally calling out “I Need You Now!” Hot Chip prove time and time again that neither the bleakest of settings, nor the saddest of souls, can suppress the overwhelming urge we have to bounce around a room to a funky groove. Get…

Video | The Speedbumps – Done Treading Water

Are you having a tough day? Muffin. To buck yourself up, consider bears. I’ll explain: even your best day would be a super terrible and boring day for a bear, so a bear having a bad day outweighs your bad day by a million. The Speedbumps’ video for “Done Treading Water” will prove that for you. See? Your day wasn’t so bad. The song’s gentle, folky sound belies the subject matter; sometimes everything is really the worst and you just have to get through it. It’s soothing to have pretty little tinkling keys while you reflect upon all the bad…

Video | The Gotobeds – New York’s Alright

Remember in the 90s when televisions started offering “picture-in-picture” and everyone thought it was basically the coolest thing ever even though it’s a really awkward way to watch tv? Pittsburgh’s Gotobeds remember. Their video for “New York’s Alright” makes a much better use of that feature. Their brand of fun, raucous indie-punk is perfectly suited to either shotgunning beers at Niagara Falls or watching a cat flip out over a laser beam – both of which they kindly provide in the video. Also, there’s a rainbow guitar strap involved that looks just like a pair of suspenders my dad used…

Video | Meat Wave – Sham King

Friends in Chicago: I am concerned for your safety! In this eye-opening exposé from Meat Wave, it appears that the Grim Reaper stalks your streets. On a bike. Be alert! Or, if you want to be strictly accurate, Chicago’s Meat Wave (top-notch band name alert!) has put out a new video for their song “Sham King.” It’s not every punk song that can put a falsetto to use, so this one’s worth a listen. Aside from their awesome name, Meat Wave has a few other things going for them. They’ve just opened for Perfect Pussy in Brooklyn, and their…

Video | The Bandicoots – Mind Your Manors

The Bandicoots know what you’re thinking. The second you read their name, you started thinking about Crash Bandicoot. This is ok with them. Apparently they had the game up and running for people to play at the merch table of a recent show. So that’s reason #1 that these guys are cool. Reason #2 is that this video for “Mind Your Manors” answers the eternal question of our age, “Where’s Waldo?,” with “Where isn’t Waldo?” It’s a chase scene and a weird scene. There are bananas and sweet boots and one really creepy smile. It also answers the question “would…

Photos | Kaleo @ The Middle East Downstairs

Photos by Boston Concert Photography Sometimes you get lucky and that one band from Iceland you’ve been digging just happens to be headlining a Taste of Iceland event in your city on your birthday. Sometimes you get even luckier and that band is Kaleo. A majority of the now Austin-based foursome have been friends since attending elementary school together just outside of Reykjavik, but it wasn’t until 2013’s self-titled album made it’s way into the mix that they began to really garner attention from the rest of the world. Most recently, the the buzz-worthy “All the Pretty Girls” (video below)…

Video | Current Swell – Rollin

As the token Canadian on staff here, it is incumbent upon me to tell you about Canadian bands when they come across my desk. As the even-more-token British Columbian, even more so for bands from my home province. So I am pleased to be writing today about Current Swell, from Victoria. I mean, it’s not like I’m breaking the news, here. They’ve been doing the thing for 6 years and have fans all over the world – but maybe they’re about to get a few more right here. They’ll be playing Great Scott on March 12, but until then,…
