May or May Not
May is a weird month. The weather finally cooperates and instead of feeling relieved you just feel itchy. Like something's supposed to happen and it hasn't yet. Waiting on a thing you can't name.
This mixtape lives in that feeling.
It opens with the itch. Michigander freaking out, Bleachers not joking, Deer Tick grinding, bbno$ being chaotic just for the hell of it. Nobody's doing anything yet. Just pacing. Then Effie Zilch shows up with Lover Boy and the mood lifts. There's a warmer current running through the middle of this list. Fruit Bats and Alela Diane and Petey USA, wide open and optimistic in that fragile late-spring way.
Gets complicated from there, because May always does. Kurt Vile does his slow dissolve thing. of Montreal dreams a little. Tallest Man on Earth goes quiet. The part of the tape where the pace drops and you just sit with it for a while.
Then Father John Misty shows up and the vibe shifts. Adeem the Artist, Kacey and Miranda, Hiss Golden Messenger. Patient, honest, unhurried. The back half of this list has some weight to it.
Pokey LaFarge closes the whole thing down. Worn in, matter of fact, still moving.
May or may not know where any of this is going. That's kind of the point.
