## Putting Away the Summer Clothes

October is the month where you finally admit summer's over, the shorts get packed away and it's dark by six, but for a few weeks you're kind of living in two seasons at once. That's where this one landed for me. I built it as two sides this time, like a record you actually have to get up and flip, and the split ended up following the month pretty closely.

## Side A: Out the door

Side A is the part of October that still thinks it's August. Izaak Opatz gets it rolling with a little swagger, then Remi Wolf and Rainbow Kitten Surprise turn it up, and it doesn't really let up until Michael Kiwanuka shows up at track six and starts folding the summer clothes, which is honestly where this whole thing got its name.

Right after that is the stretch I kept coming back to all month, three songs that hit me in completely different ways. Aaron Frazer's Tell Me has a neo-soul warmth that feels like it's beaming in from another era. The Sways go somewhere golden and 70s, and when that chorus lands I can't help singing the harmony with them. Then slimdan's Suitcase swings over into power pop, the kind of earworm you have no interest in shaking, so you just let it loop. Then it gets a little scrappy on purpose. Ron Gallo, The Chats and Wavves back to back is the closest this playlist gets to a basement show, and I wanted that rowdiness in there before the side turns earnest again with Caroline Rose, THAO and Margaret Glaspy.

Everything on Side A is climbing toward White Roses by Mondo Cozmo and Jim James, and it's a little hard to explain what this one does to me. Maybe it's just something I need to hear right now, but the exaltations in that chorus cut deep, pulling me down and then lifting me right back up. It needed to be the last thing before the flip, the spot where the first half finally says what it's been building toward, so the Rayland Baxter, Cory Branan and Lydia Loveless run right before it does the work of walking you up the hill.

## Side B: Longer nights

Side B starts in the quiet White Roses leaves behind. Mon Rovîa, The Tallest Man On Earth, James Felice and Tyler Lyle ease you down into When It Rains by The Palms, which for me is the true heartbeat of Side B. It's a heavy-hearted, kind of helpless song about accepting the things that are just out of your control, and as anthems of acceptance go, it's one you need to hear this month. From there it goes after dark. Josiah and the Bonnevilles were a late swap, and Pyro kicks that stretch off.

Then it's porch light country for a while, Jake Klar and Blue Ranger, Adeem the Artist, Brent Cobb, Boy Golden and Cat Clyde, and Chris Acker. I didn't want the record to just fade out on you though, so Mountain Grass Unit, Jesse Welles, Marcus King and Jake Bugg pick the pace back up before The Decemberists bring it in for the landing. They hold a dear spot in my heart, and when I hear Colin Meloy's voice I just feel things. The Better Part of Bravery closes out the new animated film Wildwood, and it felt right closing this one too. There's a warmth to it, and a message about the bravery of letting go, which might be the scariest thing you can do.

Start at track one, flip it after White Roses, and let it run.
