Mixtape | September 2026
September had death on the brain, apparently. I didn't plan it, but "Death Drive," "The Price and the Cost," and "Death's Commuter Blues" all landed in the pool around the same time, and once Eliza Edens was the opener I couldn't unhear the thread. It's not a sad mix though, if anything it's the opposite, a reminder that the clock is running so you might as well turn it up, which is pretty much what James Felice is saying in the song I stole the title from.
Act I comes out swinging with Cory Branan, Sports Team, Palmyra and Lydia Loveless before The War On Drugs lets some air in. Palmyra has been one of my favorite bands for a while now and "Blame Game" is a big reason why.
Act II pulls it down. Tyler Lyle picks the death thread back up right as things get quieter, and from there it's The Tallest Man On Earth, James Felice and Jake Klar keeping it close and patient.
Act III is where the whole thing settles. Taylor Ashton sits at the center with "Susanna," and he shows up a few songs earlier singing backup on Elizabeth P.W.'s "The Captain," which felt like a nice little preview before he gets the spotlight.
Act IV is the soul run, Pokey LaFarge into Eddie 9V into the Honeydrops, then Aaron Frazer, Thee Sinseers and Leon Bridges, and Dent May and Ethan Regan close it out while kind of opening the door to what's next.
Act V is where it gets weird on purpose. Caroline Rose's "Hello Again, Jim" and slimdan's "2 Dollar Bill" are two of the songs I've been loving most this month so I put them back to back, then Wet World and yes, Yung Gravy, because a mix this long earns at least one left turn you didn't see coming. CHVRCHES and Junior Pro with Natalie Prass bring it back down to earth.
The landing goes The Lumineers, Vulfmon and Evangeline, and then Father John Misty zooming all the way out.
Start at track one and let it run.
