Video | The Decemberists – This is Why We Fight

Off their most recent album, the Decemberists release ‘This is Why We Fight,’ and I guess what they are trying to say is they fight for the post-apocalyptic high school children.  Great song, interesting video.

New Music | Other Lives – For 12

For 12

Other Lives have this surreal, ethereal sound to them that is parlayed into their most recent released single ‘For 12.’ The single in question comes from their forthcoming album ‘Tamer Animals‘ which is slated to release May 17th on tbd records.

The song sounds as though it comes from a fantasy world in a deep wooded area with its gentle strumming, quietly almost hummed vocals and lush accompanying string assortments. They’ve created a beautiful, angelic yet easily listenable sound that is reminiscent of a softer Fleet Foxes.

Review | Wye Oak and Callers at the Middle East Upstairs

words by: Courtney Leigh Allen   Heartbeat (the Wire Cover) Life of Love Brooklyn-based trio Callers mesmerized the crowd opening for Wye Oak at the Middle East Upstairs Tuesday night. If you’ve never heard of Callers, their sound is familiar, yet distinct. Sara Lucas plays guitar, but her main instrument is her voice, which weaves through each song as the tempo and rhythm rises and falls around it. The trio – vocalist Lucas, guitarist Ryan Seaton and drummer Don Godwin – first met in New Orleans, and their sound includes blues, folk and jazz influences. In fact, it’s the otherworldliness of…

New Music | My Morning Jacket – Circuital

Circuital Jim (I refuse to call him Yim) James and the bunch are just about to release a brand new album titled ‘Circuital.’  The album track was released for download today and it is per usual, reverb-soaked sound with a Jim’s angelic voice over warm and crunchy guitars, and jangly keys.  Registering at 7 minutes, its quite the rambling song. Pre-Order Circuital

Live Tonight | Wye Oak with Callers & Jaggery

Holy Holy Civilian words by: Courtney Leigh Allen It seems that as of late, everyone has been talking about the boy-girl duo Wye Oak. The Baltimore pair will play at the Middle East Upstairs Tuesday April 13 with Callers and Jaggery opening. Wye Oak released their third full-length album Civilian in early March and came out of SXSW with a swarm of praise, from new and old fans alike. Their sound, which consists of Jenn Wasner on guitar and vocals and Andy Stack on drums and keyboard, is full of floating vocals, volume explosions and thumping bass lines and is…

New Music | Jeremy Lee Given – Arapaima

Jeremy Lee Given – Arapaima Funny how things happen but last week I had been on an interview with Local Music 101 (podcast) and we were talking about local acts that I was excited about.  One of which I spoke of is Jeremy Lee Given, who is also a member of Boston band Rodeo Church.  Months ago Given had afforded me the opportunity to hear his fantastic solo album Old Flames; and soon after this conversation I had with Local Music 101, Jeremy came out of nowhere to give me his newest single, one that I’m probably going to listen…
