Matt Longo Alexandria EP

The High Life Matt Longo, formerly the lead singer of Sex During Wartime, wrote and recorded this sweet little EP in Harlem, NY, entitled Alexandria. His writing and playing is an honest reflection of a relationship in its highs (The High Life) and lows (Building a Wall).  The music is an amalgamation of influences fom indie-pop to country.  Alexandria is a wonderful album that is available for free on Matt’s Bandcamp.  I’m really glad he came forward and shared his art with me, and I’m pleased to give you a chance to hear it as well. The Ones that Got Away

It was impossible to choose my top 20 (i chose a 1 and a 1a) and I felt like I was shortchanging some great music out there this year.  So, I thought it would be a good idea to view the ones that got away this year. Drive By Truckers  – The Big To-Do Drive By Truckers consistently put out fantastic music year in and year out.  This year their album, the Big To-Do (released in March) and sometimes I feel like they don’t get enough attention.  If southern rock / country is your thing, these guys do it really…

Video | The Luyas – Tiny Head

The Luyas released their video for ‘Tiny Head’ on stereogum today.   Their upcoming album, Too Beautiful to Work, will be released on February 22 (February 21, in the UK). I’ve gotten a chance to listen to the album, its a collection of echo-drenched space-age pop songs, its futurist but retro at the same time.  Its all very dreamy and the more you listen to, the more small nuances you’ll find. My Top Albums of ’10 5 – 1

It’s near impossible to pick one top album with the massive amount of music I listened to this year but I thought I’d try to at least give you an idea of what you should grab this year before we start anew. 20 thru 16;  15 thru 11; 10 thru 6 5.  Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt As well as sharing a birthdate with me, Kristian Mattson shared with us a fantastic album in the Wild Hunt.  His acoustic folk blend  and his trademark raspy voice made this an absolute favorite of mine.  His words are sincere…

Drive By Truckers “Used to Be A Cop”

Used to Be A Cop Go Go Boots, Drive By Truckers newest album is set to be released on February 15, 2011.  They’ve released a track off the album, titled “Used to Be a Cop,” a 7 minute alt country / blues track that, if you are a fan of DBT will be right up your alley.  Its a slow moving, story driven track, with a great country blues feel, it might be a long track but well worth every minute. Pre-Order at their website.

Monday I debuted 20 thru 16; Yesterday my 15 thru 11. 10.  The Morning Benders  – Big Echo This album was so damn good.  The songs by Chris Chu, are some of the best songs written in this calendar year.  ‘Excuses,’  is one of the sweetest pop-rock songs we heard this year.  Put together with one of the…

New Music | Wye Oak – Civilian

Civilian The much anticipated 3rd release (Civilian) of Baltimore duo Wye Oak won’t come until 2011.  But yesterday amped up the anticipation with title track, Civilian being released. The track is powerful, yet vocally quiet singer Jenn Wasner’s voice conveys that strength until succumbed by Andy Stack’s guitars, organs, pounding percussions drown her out.  The song is quite beautiful, and a joy to listen to. Wye Oak will also be touring with the Decemberists (holy awesome show batman!) next month here in Boston. Mon Jan 24, 2011 – New York NY Beacon Theatre with The Decemberists Tue Jan 25, 2011 –…

Los Campesinos! Too Many Flesh Suppers

Too Many Flesh Suppers Welsh indie poppers drop an obscure b-side “Too Many Flesh Suppers,” a dark and twisted pop track (that doesn’t make sense) that is heart-wrenching and  beautiful.  The string compositions are morose, as is the title of the track, and the lyrics just as dark You ripped off my flesh and my heart grabbed the ribs like a prisoner. Check out the track, and more Campesinos! Website | Facebook | Myspace | Twitter
