This past Friday night at The Columbus Theatre in Providence, something pretty damn special took place.

A collection of fans, musicians, and artisans of all kinds gathered in torrential conditions to come to the aid of one of their own: Dave Lamb of Brown Bird.

Recently, while on tour supporting their latest release, Lamb was taken to the hospital for severe exhaustion. Despite several attempts to heal up and get back on the road, the lack of stamina would continually return. Lamb and MorganEve Swain (the other half of Brown Bird) returned home to Rhode Island, where Dave was eventually diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Read more about it in this great interview over here.

In addition to an on-line fundraiser (which you can still contribute to!), friends and fans have been doing everything they can to help the insurance-less musician to be able to afford the care he needs. One of the ways which his friends pitched in was putting on an amazing benefit show lead by Joe Fletcher and The Wrong Reasons and featuring the likes of J.P. Harris and Smith & Weeden, who could quite possibly be considered one of Providence’s best kept secrets.

In addition to the musical performances, local artisans donated photos and other works to a silent auction put together by local stand-out photographer J James Joiner, which seemed to be garnering a lot of attention and raking in a good bit of much needed dough.

Saying the evening’s event was heart-warming may seem a bit trite, but I’ve been to a few shows, and rarely have I felt energy like I did that night at The Columbus.

And while it’s unfortunate that it sometimes takes a tragic occurrence to bring people together in such a fantastic way, a few things were affirmed on that rainy night; the Providence music and arts community is in full on ass-kicking mode and that community loves Dave Lamb.
