City and Colour – Fragile Bird
Dallas Greene and his band City and Colour played to a sold-out crowd at the House of Blues on Lansdowne street Friday night. The fivesome walked on stage, lights dimmed and immediately started it off with We Found Each Other In The Dark, the opening track off City and Colour’s most recent album, Little Hell. Right from the start the sound was much fuller and overall, beyond anything that is conveyed on the studio recording.
Dallas, who stood in a dark shirt, suspenders and bow tie, shared harmonies with his bassist. And not only did they alternate between tracks off of Little Hell, and previous albums, but they alternated between the full-band sound, and verses of just Green’s voice, spotlighted to the left of
the stage. And while hearing these songs come to life with the surrounding sound of a full band was great, you lose a bit of what makes the album so fantastic, the moments where Greene’s voice rises and the falls unexpectedly in the middle of a verse.
But a few songs later, when the bass and drums kicked in for the chorus of The Grand Optimist, I was convinced the full-band sound was perfect. In the end, I think City and Colour is one of those bands you have to see multiple times. At least once in a small venue, or playing acoustic. And at least once, at a larger venue with a full band. But in the meantime, I’ll go back and re-listen
