Song of the Week | Talkboy - Mother

The WMFO X Music Savage Show “Song of the Week” spotlight this week is once again focused sharply on the UK city of Leeds (a place that seems to have a never ending wealth of musical talent given the number of times I have highlighted bands from the area). This time we have brand new band Talkboy square in our sites with their debut single, “Mother.” The sextet officially formed late in 2017 and with only a few months of existence they’ve already received tons of attention. That is saying something!
Talkboy are Katie Heap (vocals), Calum Juniper (vocals), Tim Malkin (guitar), Charlotte Jones (keys), Tom Sargent (bass), and Jake Greenway (drums) and together they create a lively, infectious sound that combines swirling guitars with back n’ forth female/male vocals which build a harmonious bridge to the songs joyous crescendo full of xylophone chimes and crashing cymbals! There are hints of Pulp and pieces of Lush and touches of The Wedding Present jammed into just over 2 minutes of terrific music. While there are influences of the great UK bands that came before them, Talkboy are clearly paving their own musical path and I think they have a “next big thing” vibe you should take notice of quick! Listen to the stellar debut single and you’ll understand.
The band have already played sets at 2017’s Live at Leeds, Gold Sounds and a sold out show curated by BBC Introducing producer, Abbie McCarthy. Looks like 2018 is turning out to be pretty great as well so keep your ears and eyes pealed for more from Talkboy soon!
“Mother” is officially released today, June 27th and is available on all digital platforms.
