Mixtape | October 2017

Press Play October was a spooky good month for new music, and I’m psyched for the broad range of music that we’ve got on this playlist. Everything from power pop jams to jangly americana to lo-fi ambling indie rock. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. As always if there’s something I missed, please leave a comment and tell me what it is.

Pickathon 2013 @ Pendarvis Farm (PDX)

Photos by inger klekacz [T]he first year I went to Pickathon, I accidentally disturbed a bee nest while pitching my tent, and was stung three times while getting chased out of the area. The second year I went to Pickathon, I pitched my tent on a hill, neglecting to put up the rain fly. I was awakened by rain around 2am on day 3, and as I rushed to put the rainfly up, I tripped on the tent’s threshold and took a tumble down the hill, in the dark, in the rain, in my underwear, onto the world’s unluckiest fern.…

Among the numerous performers were Cold Specks, Andrew Bird, Tift Merritt, The Felice Brothers, Spirit Family Reunion, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joe Fletcher, Michael Kiwanuka, The Lumineers and a grand finale with Beck. Enjoy the final in photos from our photographer, Jamie Reiley, and let us know what your favorite act or acts…

New Music | Andrew Bird – Three White Horses

[T]ake a listen to Andrew Bird’s fantastic new single “Three White Horses” from the forthcoming Hands of Glory out October 30th on Mom+Pop. The new record is an 8-song companion piece to his album Break it Yourself which was released earlier this year.  Inspired by his old-time live sets, Andrew and his band recorded the new material using only acoustic instruments and sang into a single microphone. If this new track is an indication of the rest of the album we are in for a treat!

New Music | Andrew Bird – Crown Salesman

Andrew Bird – The Crown Salesman In celebration of Bird’s 7″ Break it Yourself, he has released his cover of Alpha Consumer’s track “The Crown Salesman.” Alpha Consumer is comprised of Bird’s longtime backing band members Jeremy Ylvisaker and Michael Lewis, so is the cover connection. Though Bird’s styling is all over this, it feels a bit distant, and far more distorted and full of feedback. Grab the mp3 on Bird’s Facebook Page.

New Music | Andrew Bird – Eyeoneye

About to release his 12th album (wow!) Andrew Bird’s, Break It Yourself, is due March 6 on Mom + Pop. Following his last album Eyeoneye seems to be one of his most accessible and warm efforts. The full on chamber style seems to be toned down to a more emotionally charged indie rock sound. It’s a refreshing sound from Bird who’s music can feel a bit tangential sometimes.

On 1/24, Fans can pre-order the Break It Yourself deluxe edition box set at http://andrewbird.net and receive an immediate digital download of the track. Hand numbered and limited to 1,000, the linen wrapped box set includes the 180-gram double vinyl album, CD, Here’s What Happened DVD, original Jay Ryan poster, stationary and stamp set, lyric booklet and a photographic reproduction of the 1915 album cover image.

New Music | Andrew Bird – Hot Math

Andrew Bird – Hot Math On October 25, Andrew Bird will release Useless Creatures, an instrumental album which will include 9-tracks featuring guests Wilco’s Glenn Kotche and Todd Sickafoose. “Hot Math,” available as a free download from Bella Union. ‘Hot Math‘ is a lo-fi recording I made myself in my barn,” Bird said in a NY Times column last year. “It’s an example of a West African polyrhythmic groove I’ve been into for years and in this case I was clearly enjoying myself. This is elusive stuff. It just doesn’t work by choreography; you just have to be in the right mood.”
