Review | Boston Calling 2017

// Review by Martin Smith The Boston Calling music festival took a big step forward this year. They started by moving the location from the Boston’s City Hall Plaza to the much larger Harvard Athletic Complex. Festival goers navigated between three music stages, a comedy club, and in their down time, entertained themselves with craft beer tents, local food vendors, wine tasting, a giant connect-four, jenga, bag-toss, and even a ferris-wheel. While years past have included some big name national acts, the Boston Calling crowd remained mostly local. That all changed with the expansion of the 2017 festival, which really…

New Music | Kalispell – Westbound

Kalispell – Methodist Lift [T]his beautiful little album has been sitting inside my computer for far too long without me talking about it.  Kalispell is the musical project from Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s Shane Leonard. Leonard, studied english ed at Wisconsin – Eau Claire and formed a band, Lowtel, with a few guys you might know of, Sean Carey (Bon Iver) and Jeremy Boetcher (S.Carey) and John Dehaven.  There’s obviously something in the water over there in Wisconsin, because Kalispell’s album Westbound (out in May of 2012) is one delightfully gorgeous album.  Similar in the vein of Bon Iver & Field…

Video | Bon Iver – Beth/Rest

[B]on Iver’s got a new video out for Beth/Rest, and it’s a pretty spot on video for such an atmospheric 80s tune. It’s the story of otherworldly love: think part Fern Gulley, part Avatar.  Bon Iver guitarist Mike Noyce stars in it, as one of the two lovers and if you make it through to the end, you get a few glimpses of the band, shining in bright light jamming out on some saxophone solos. It’s actually pretty hilarious. Which is  why I’ve always appreciated this song. Yes it’s ridiculous, and hilarious, but it’s damn good too. For those…

Review | Bon Iver at the BOA Pavilion

Calgary – Bon Iver [B]on Iver passed through Boston last Thursday night, playing to a packed crowd at the BOA Pavilion, with Anais Mitchell opening. Live Review | Field Report at Great Scott

Field Report – Taking Alcatraz [L]ast Wednesday evening the guys of Field Report stopped by the Great Scott in Allston for a satisfying sneak preview of their upcoming debut album. The Milwaukee, WI natives have made a name for themselves through their stellar SXSW performances, and of course singer-songwriter Chris Porterfield’s association with Justin Vernon. Porterfield (Field Report is an anagram of Porterfield) was in Vernon’s early band, DeYarmond Edison, but quit the band when the guys moved to North Carolina. Fast forward to now, where members of the original band have formed (obviously) Bon Iver, Megafaun, Drying girlfriends the…

Review | Kathleen Edwards – Voyageur

[K]athleen Edwards’ fourth studio album Voyageur came out in January, and I loved it immediately. But sidetracked by other great early 2012 releases, I never quite got around to putting my feelings into writing. I happened across the album again a few weeks ago and haven’t stopped listening. Kathleen Edwards set out to break away from the alternative country sounds Yet it better viagra coupon $10: bother use month generic cialis online verdeyogurt.com the what it the.
