Mixtape | December 2017

Press Play Our final month of the year has officially been closed. This has been a fantastic music year, and I’ve been having a lot of fun putting together these monthly mixes again. It’s great to chronicle a year based on what you’ve been listening to, and we’re so lucky these days to have enough new music each month to put together these. I hope you enjoy some new tunes over your holiday break, and please let me know what I might have missed this month.

Best Records of 2012 | 40 – 36

40. Patrick Watson – Adventures in Your Own Backyard – Patrick Watson is gaining steam with lush orchestrated indie-rock / folk songs that seem to float and quiver over this excellent album that was remarkably recorded in the singer’s apartment. There are vast sounds coming from every angle, and Watson uses his voice to fog over these orchestrations creating a huge sound that will delight you from every angle. Check out Into Giants, a very Simon & Garfunkel(y) sound as well as the title track that will spin your head. Listen: Patrick Watson – Into Giants | Buy: Adventures In…

Review | Glen Hansard – Rhythm and Repose

[I]t’s hard to believe that Rhythm and Repose, the latest from Irish singer/songwriter Glen Hansard is actually his first solo release. Through the 90s and early 00s, Hansard toured with The Frames. Video | Glen Hansard – Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting

Glen Hansard’s highly anticipated new record Rhythm and Repose may be a couple of months away, but we are getting a taste of his track “Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting,” a song that to me feels very Van Morrison-like.  It’s carefree & summery and a breath of fresh air.  Pick up the single on iTunes now.  We’ll see Rhythm and Repose in June.

The Swell Season – Feeling the Pull [LIVE]

The Swell Season is made up of guitarist Glen Hansard and pianist Marketa Irglova.  If you haven’t seen the movie, Once, which they were in, I’d definitely recommend it.  Further than the music, these two have a fantastic sound together, and will be making their way to Newport Folk Festival next weekend. They recently recorded a track for Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, covering Candi Staton’s Young Hearts Run Free.  Check out their version of Young Hearts Run Free here. Check out the rest of this live session: The Swell Season Live at Spinner.com, 2009 01. Low Rising http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9gnsF… 02. Fantasy Man…
