New Music | Joe Purdy – New Years Eve

If there was ever a stirring song that could shake you to the core, it’s Joe Purdy’s newest, “New Years Eve.” Written as a reflection of the year past, and looking to the future, it’s a shining example of pure optimism in songwriting form, and I’ll be damned if I don’t agree with every god damn word of it. This call for hope, peace and unity carries a torch of the 60’s movements, and sounds like it came recorded on a tape and sat and gathered dust somewhere in a basement at Stax. Good luck not putting it on repeat. The…

New Music | Whitney – No Matter Where We Go

The beauty of a short song is they are usually packed in with a really tight hook. That’s definitely the case with Whitney’s newest single, “No Matter Where We Go,” a near insatiably repeatable song that is the perfect sound for the incoming summer months. This song is all about riding in a car with the windows down, in fact that statement is nearly eponymous. The guitar twirls around like an Duane Allman lick, while Julien Ehrlich’s vocal falsetto leads the repeated hook that’s got instant likability. Their debut, Light Upon the Lake, is due in June 3 on Secretly…

New Music | Ethan Burns – Homeward

I haven’t been able to find out too much about California’s Ethan Burns. But this track that was released “Homeward,” landed in my inbox, and it’s really great. In “Homeward,” Burns finds himself a troubadour in Stax-esque soul/ rhythm and blues song about the never-ending doubt about a broken relationship. The wanting needing bleeds through Burns’ raspy voice, and the crispy rhythms really nicely encapsulate that early sixties sound. You could easily compare “Homeward,” to a soul contemporary like Leon Bridges, and if that’s the case, I can’t wait to hear more. Check out more Ethan Burns Facebook | Youtube…

New Music | Nico Yaryan – You Belong To Me

I’m really into this new track from Los Angeles’ Nico Yaryan. “You Belong to Me,” finds Yaryan crooning about regret about the demise of a relationship. The lo-fi, understated sound, fits the honest songwriting, and simplicity of this song that will have you tapping your toes right quick. “You Belong to Me,” will appear on Yaryan’s What a Tease, which drops June 3rd on Partisan Records, pre-order it here.

New Music | Harpooner – Carolines

The pounding drumline instantly brought me in on Harpooner’s newest single, “Carolines,” which hovers around the concept of racial inequality. The Nashville by way of Indiana band is about to release their debut, Rose Park, and I’m eating up this first single. The pounding indie-rock song features a fierce drumline from Josh Morrow that really insists that you stop and listen now. For balance, the pounding drums paired with strings from Diederik Van Wassener’s violin, which lends that perfect extra layer to sonic landscape, vox and math rock-y guitar from Scott Schmadeke, & Max Mullen on bass. It’s a song…

New Music | Josiah & The Bonnevilles – Cold Blood

Tennessee’s Josiah & The Bonnevilles are about to announce the release of their debut EP, Cold Blood on Vagrant Records. The EP which was co-produced and mixed by Dave Way (Fiona Apple, Paul McCartney, Macy Gray) and today we’re featuring the eponymous single, “Cold Blood,” an earnest, heartbreaking introspective story told through the eyes of someone who has deep regret, and sorrow for what they’ve become. The sparse instrumentation & simple guitar plucking add to the atmosphere of a song that is full of brooding and self-analysis. It feels like an intimate, view into something we shouldn’t be seeing. Cold…

New Music | Nico Yaryan – Just Tell Me

LA-based Nico Yaryan has given us another taste from his upcoming record, What A Tease, out June 3rd on Partisan Records. “Just Tell Me,” is a track that you can practically feel the ocean air on, it’s got a cool vibe, with repeating guitar riffs, and a slow and steady rhythm that’ll have your head nodding before you know you’re actually doing it. On “Just Tell Me,” we’re introduced to a story from Yaryan, and struggles with a long-distance romance. It’s a song about ruining a perfectly good relationship, and agonizing over it, the feeling of helplessness that spans the…

Photos + Review | Aaron Lee Tasjan + Brian Wright @ Atwood’s

Cafe Rooster Sessions Vol 1 by Brian Wright Our friends at Atwood’s always seem to book amazing shows, we’ve caught so many great acts within those 4 walls, and last Tuesday night was another point of proof that awesome things are happening there. When I walked through the doors, the band was just fixing to get started on a few hours of great americana. Getting a taste of ALT with a band transformed his songs thanks to the rhythm section of bassist Keith Christopher and drummer Chris Marine. As a combined act, Aaron Lee Tasjan and Brian Wright delivered on…
