Sharon Van Etten – Serpents It really doesn’t matter what’s going on in your life or where you’re at in your current relationships, in love or friendship, but Sharon Van Etten’s latest, Tramp, is likely to be the perfect dose of music therapy. Best taken in the early morning, or late at night. Volume all the way up. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner and featuring guest appearances from Dessner and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, Tramp is exactly the progression you want to Few smells from and going. After it about and Vitamin just time 1man 1 jar…

Top 50 Albums of 2011 30-26

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm.  Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I’m going to do so through the use of a list.  It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I’m going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. 30. White Denim – D White Denim – Anvil Everything The bluesy, garage-rock trio White Denim created a psych-rock abstract album that was a bit avant-garde and a bit influence driven. To be redundant, they create a sound…

Review | Wye Oak and Callers at the Middle East Upstairs

words by: Courtney Leigh Allen   Heartbeat (the Wire Cover) Life of Love Brooklyn-based trio Callers mesmerized the crowd opening for Wye Oak at the Middle East Upstairs Tuesday night. If you’ve never heard of Callers, their sound is familiar, yet distinct. Sara Lucas plays guitar, but her main instrument is her voice, which weaves through each song as the tempo and rhythm rises and falls around it. The trio – vocalist Lucas, guitarist Ryan Seaton and drummer Don Godwin – first met in New Orleans, and their sound includes blues, folk and jazz influences. In fact, it’s the otherworldliness of…

Live Tonight | Wye Oak with Callers & Jaggery

Holy Holy Civilian words by: Courtney Leigh Allen It seems that as of late, everyone has been talking about the boy-girl duo Wye Oak. The Baltimore pair will play at the Middle East Upstairs Tuesday April 13 with Callers and Jaggery opening. Wye Oak released their third full-length album Civilian in early March and came out of SXSW with a swarm of praise, from new and old fans alike. Their sound, which consists of Jenn Wasner on guitar and vocals and Andy Stack on drums and keyboard, is full of floating vocals, volume explosions and thumping bass lines and is…

New Music | Wye Oak – Holy Holy

Holy Holy The much anticipated 3rd release (Civilian) of Baltimore duo Wye Oak is just around the bend, and today I caught wind of 3rd track on the album, Holy Holy.  Holy Holy is right, this track is awesome.  I’ve now heard two tracks on this album, both of which are some powerful music.  This album is shaping up to be something we’ll be talking about come end of year, though it remains to be seen. Look for Civilian 3/8 on Merge.

New Music | Wye Oak – Civilian

Civilian The much anticipated 3rd release (Civilian) of Baltimore duo Wye Oak won’t come until 2011.  But yesterday amped up the anticipation with title track, Civilian being released. The track is powerful, yet vocally quiet singer Jenn Wasner’s voice conveys that strength until succumbed by Andy Stack’s guitars, organs, pounding percussions drown her out.  The song is quite beautiful, and a joy to listen to. Wye Oak will also be touring with the Decemberists (holy awesome show batman!) next month here in Boston. Mon Jan 24, 2011 – New York NY Beacon Theatre with The Decemberists Tue Jan 25, 2011 –…
