James Vincent McMorrow – If I Had a Boat

If I Had a Boat Check out Dublin’s James Vincent McMorrow a vocal talent that’s got to be heard.  First track to be released off his upcoming (January 25) debut LP entitled, Early in the Morning, is a beautiful sounding song.  The haunting allegory of a man at sea lost in or out of love is one that’s never out of style.  The pure emotionality of his voice and the power of it during the bridge and chorus is really fantastic. Look forward to his upcoming LP later this month. http://www.jamesvmcmorrow.com/

Jeremy Lee Given – Old Flames

Rebel Ghost Last week I got quite the little New Years gift.  A submission from Jeremy Lee Given in the form of his debut effort Old Flames. Knoxville’s Jeremy Lee Given, tracked mostly at his father’s home  in Fountain City, Tennessee, the album was then produced just outside of Boston in Winchester, MA by producer Will Lakritz. The album, entitled Old Flames, has been in heavy rotation for me and for good reason.  It’s a downtempo album with some great sounds.  Subtlety in music can be a difficult concept to master and I think Given has got this in spades.…

Callers – Heartbeat (Cover)

Heartbeat Life of Love This cover of Wire’s Heartbeat shows shows off a soulful, wonderful voice in Sara Lucas; and opened me into further inspection to hear what else Callers has done.   What I found in their album Life of Love is a collection of songs written and recorded that complement and enhance her sensual, soulful voice, Lucas sounds as though she’s come straight out of a 70’s soul session.  The songs are sometimes dark and brooding and as they put it ‘cathartic.’ The band recently signed with western vinyl, and are about to go on tour.  If you get…

Akron/Family Album Details and New Single

So It Goes Akron/Family have got a new LP to be released next month (Feb 8th) from Dead Oceans records.  The album’s title, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, a wordy one, but they will tour it relentlessly over the next 3 months. The lead single, So It Goes, is a bluesy track that basically sounds like dirty Black Keys guitar riff sample.  Its rough on the edges but contains these airy vocals, and lightly sprinkled harmonizing in the background gives this track a nice contrast.  The song has this nice hectic feel to it, it really brings out…

Out in March, the record features both songs from the band’s debut single, ‘Wreckin’ Bar’ and ‘Blow It Up’, as well as ‘If You Wanna’, the song that first got them noticed.

Kelli Scarr – Piece

Driftwood I got a copy of Kelli Scarr’s Piece and normally speaking I’m not highly inspired by female vocalists.  This one stood out to me.  Her voice has a tenderness, a gossamer quality, it feels very intimate.  It’s beautiful, serene, and easy to listen to. What’s great about this album is the sense of ‘feeling’ in it.  You can tell that Piece is largely a reflection of Kelli’s life.  It’s extremely personal, and could probably accompany a scrapbook of her journeys in life. This album is worth picking up for a quiet day of listening.  Its one of those listen…

David Wax Museum’s Born with a Broken Heart

Born With A Broken Heart Boston based folk band David Wax Musem craft Latin / Americana / Folk music by fusing Mexican roots with country, folk, and rock.  With an assortment of lesser known instruments (Whats a quijada anyway?) they perform some amazing sounding music.  Gaining momentum after their show at the Newport Folk Festival over the summer, they have recorded a new album and I await the final release here in Boston in February. Their upcoming album, Everything is Saved, which will be released February 3rd, contains the single, Born With A Broken Heart, with a latin rhythm, and…
