Photos | Hermanos Gutiérrez @ Armory for the Arts

They say pictures are worth a thousand words, and that may be true, but pictures can’t always capture a perfect vibe. And a perfect vibe is exactly what Hermanos Gutiérrez brought to Arts at the Armory. Touring behind the newly released “El Bueno Y El Malo“—which was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach at his Easy Eye Sound Studios—brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez have low-key been making a lot of noise. Per the brothers, the title of the album is a reference to Sergio Leone’s legendary 1966 spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and especially its…

Photos | Aaron Lee Tasjan + Tristen @ Brighton Music Hall

Sometimes a show is so good you can’t believe it happened. Of course—after the last couple of years—any show is a great thing, but the Aaron Lee Tasjan + Tristen show last week was ridiculously great. Tasjan’s set was, as you would expect if you’re at all familiar with the artist, the perfect blend of old and new, rockers and ballads, covers and originals. As far as the Music Savage crew is concerned, ALT’s sets are some of the best in the game today. Missing a chance to catch one is on the level of original sin. While we’re at…

Dan Blakeslee & The Calabash Club | Christmasland Jubilee

Christmasland Jubilee by Dan Blakeslee ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Dan Blakeslee & The Calabash Club soon would be there! Dan Blakeslee has long been a staple of the New England art scene and it just wouldn’t be the holidays without the merriest of all of Santa’s helpers gifting us the most holly jolliest music this side of the North Pole. Earlier this month he and the band released their brand new holiday album…

Album of the Week | Chrissy Stewart – House of Christina

House of Christina by Chrissy Stewart New post alert! This week I want to introduce you to my latest idea which is to highlight a particularly wonderful new album and make sure that the release of said album is on your radar! These aren’t going to be in depth reviews as I think “Album of the Week” pretty much sums up how I feel in title form. Now with that said, it’s also your goal as a music lover (and reader of the post) to spread the word on the new album far and wide via your social media accounts!…

Photos + Review | Chris Farren @ Once Somerville

Donned in glitter and a gold necklace, Chris Farren performed yet another Perfect Set at Once Somerville on January 30th on what he said was his biggest headlining show to date. Just Chris, a guitar, and a lot of projections, there was nothing lacking about his solo performance. A super funny internet presence brought to life on stage with the theme ‘Born Hot’, Farren brings the whole room in on the joke with balloons with his face on them, projections letting us know how soon his birthday is, and his own art “I drew this”. Although heavy on the entertainment…

Photos + Review | Bonny Light Horseman + Erin Rae @ The Sinclair

On a chilly February night in Cambridge, Massachusetts we packed ourselves in tight at The Sinclair to fill our souls to the brim with the warm and comforting sounds created by a handful of the most talented musicians to ever share a stage. Bonny Light Horseman and Erin Rae guided a sold-out crowd through a musical collection of songs that made us all forget the outside world for an all too brief moment. I don’t think I have ever seen a group of such talented musicians being so comfortable with each other onstage and creating beautiful harmonies that were on…

Photos + Review | Courtney Barnett @ Iron Horse Music Hall

Australian musician Courtney Barnett treated fans to an intimate, acoustic performance at Northampton’s own Iron Horse Music Hall on January 24th. The show had a relaxed playfulness to it, starting with Hachiku, the supporting act, instructing the crowd to all stomp one foot at the same time to startle Courtney in the greenroom below. Courtney continued the lightheartedness with clever banter between charming songs, as well as crowd work in the form of asking for requests only to continue the setlist as planned. Her performance was captivating and moving, only made more special by the entire room singing along, most…

Photos + Review | Hiss Golden Messenger + Molly Tuttle @ The Sinclair

November 15th was a special night for the Music Savage gang. Two of our absolute favorites shared the bill at one of our absolute favorite stomping grounds in the Greater Boston area. North Carolina’s Hiss Golden Messenger and Nashville-based musician Molly Tuttle brought all the Newport Folk energy they collected this year (Molly playing sets at the festival and Hiss appearing at an official after-show) to the packed, NFF loving crowd at The Sinclair in Cambridge. Hiss Golden Messenger has been amassing an adoring fanbase since the debut record, Country Hai East Cotton, was released in 2008. While no songs…

Photos + Review | Fruit Bats + Andrew Combs @ The Sinclair

On November 6th Eric D. Johnson brought his latest and greatest incarnation of Fruit Bats to the Boston area as the tour in support of the their latest album, Gold Past Life, stopped at The Sinclair in Harvard Square. This record is one of the Music Savage gang’s favorites, so we simply had to head out for a Wednesday night show to hear the new songs come to life in one of the best venues in town.  The songs on Gold Past Life dig in deep when coming out of your speakers or headphones. Eric and his band create an…
