November 15th was a special night for the Music Savage gang. Two of our absolute favorites shared the bill at one of our absolute favorite stomping grounds in the Greater Boston area. North Carolina’s Hiss Golden Messenger and Nashville-based musician Molly Tuttle brought all the Newport Folk energy they collected this year (Molly playing sets at the festival and Hiss appearing at an official after-show) to the packed, NFF loving crowd at The Sinclair in Cambridge. Hiss Golden Messenger has been amassing an adoring fanbase since the debut record, Country Hai East Cotton, was released in 2008. While no songs…

On November 6th Eric D. Johnson brought his latest and greatest incarnation of Fruit Bats to the Boston area as the tour in support of the their latest album, Gold Past Life, stopped at The Sinclair in Harvard Square. This record is one of the Music Savage gang’s favorites, so we simply had to head out for a Wednesday night show to hear the new songs come to life in one of the best venues in town. The songs on Gold Past Life dig in deep when coming out of your speakers or headphones. Eric and his band create an…
Leave a CommentOn September 26th Smooth Hound Smith and their incredible band brought the tour for the excellent new album, Dog in a Manger, to Atwood’s Tavern in Cambridge and as this record is one of the Music Savage gang’s favorites, we simply had to head out for a Thursday night show to hear the new songs come to life in this intimate venue. We have been fans of the Nashville duo since their 2013 self-titled debut album and it was a joy to see them live. The audience on this stop saw a charming, talented couple take over the stage in…
Leave a CommentBrent Cobb’s soulful blue collar country stylings captivated us last week, at The Sinclair. Cobb and his band “Them” delivered us from the red brick of Harvard yard to the mythological land of rural Georgia. After hitting the road opening for Chris Stapleton throughout ’19 it’s pretty obvious these guys have picked up a few things for captivating a huge audience. We were just lucky to be in a much smaller venue, and could feel guitarist Mike Harris’ slide guitar set your hair back and Cobb’s warm vocal delivery that’s a little friendly and has a little bite to it..…
Leave a CommentThe mysterious, masked country singer held the audience at ONCE Ballroom in the palm of his hand, enrapturing them with his unmatched crooner’s voice. Orville Peck is a musician that takes the entity of the classic, baritone cowboy song and makes it his own. Orville Peck and his band truly mesmerized the crowd with songs off of his 2019 album Pony released in March. The album recounts heartbreak and a life of roaming under the all encompassing theme of a forlorn cowboy. Though sad at times, the songs are generally uplifting and empowering, with that twinge of something tender, and…
Leave a CommentSummer Cannibals brought their fantastic riffs to Once Somerville on August 16th. Massachusetts band Lost Dog opened up the show, followed by Field Mouse, who had released their new album “Meaning” that day. The band described their songs as being “mostly about the world ending… because it is,” which prompted a reply of “thank god” from somewhere in the crowd, answered in a validating laugh throughout the room. The show was filled with energy and humor from all three bands. Shred masters Summer Cannibals kept the crowd enthralled with constant hair flips and amazing tunes. Their set was lively and…
Leave a CommentThe Menzingers played to a very sweaty, sold-out crowd in Worcester at The Palladium Upstairs. The Philly-born band have had a strong community of Massachusetts devotees for years, after playing a myriad of venues across the state, ranging from this same room at the Palladium to the House of Blues. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more impassioned crowd than a Menzingers crowd. The entire room sings every word to every song, from any era of the band’s discography. Even their newest song “Anna”, released not two weeks prior, was well-known and loved by the crowd. “Anna” is the first…
Leave a CommentThe new show takes a loving look back on my favorite time of the year… The Newport Folk Festival! I open with a set of songs from a few of the incredible collaborative groups that graced the stages in 2019, play you some tunes from musicians and bands that were a few of the many extraordinary highlights of the weekend, showcase a handful of musicians/bands I would love to see return to the fort, and last but not least highlight the artists I hope make their debut in 2020. Let’s have some folkin’ fun! Playlist: Redesigning Women – The HighwomenBlack…
Leave a CommentCharly Bliss is a band that looks how they sound— eccentric, colorful, and bubbly. The band gave an energetic and loving performance to a sold out Sinclair crowd Sunday, June 9th. Donned in glitter, all four members bounced around the stage, leaving no dull moments. Emily Reo opened the show with a charming performance that coupled perfectly with the show. They delivered a catchy, indie-pop set with beautiful electronic harmonies and plenty of tasteful keytar. Emily made sure not to leave without taking a video of the crowd singing happy birthday to her mom. Lead singer of Charly Bliss, Eva…
